Mrs. Ruth Caswell, a representative of the Oshawa chapter of the Canadian Heart Foundation, visited the high school and commended the students most highly for their efforts in previous years in collect- ing for the Heart Fund. The township of Cartwright makes the highest per capita donations in the area mainly due to the canvass conducted by the students. Residence Port Perry - 985-7286 search for the treatment and cure of heart and respiratory As a token of appreciation, Mrs. Caswell presented Leslie Wright, President of the Students' Council, with a special Heart Fund flag. On Sunday afternoon, February 18, about forty students from CHS, divided into twelve groups, con- ducted a canvass of the township to collect for the Canadian Heart Foundation. Upon cémpleting their can- vass, the various groups assembled at the home of Mr. G. Paisley, Principal, and were treated to Tarts (donated by Flamingo Past- ries, Port Perry) and to soft drinks (donated by Pure Spring Beverages, Port Perry). After the receipts and donations were checked, it was discovered that the students had collected $625.00 and that some dona- tions were still forthcoming. Donations may be made anytime during the month of February, so if you missed th canvassers on Sunday, please send your donation along to the school. Our total donation will hopefully ex- ceed last year's after the Heart Fund dance this Fri- day night, most of the proceeds of which will be given to the Fund. The students of Grades 11, 12 and 13 are spending a day at Durham College, Oshawa, on Monday, February 19. During their stay they will not only have a tour of the college but will also have the opportunity to sit in on special classes and get a firsthand view of the many courses being offered at Durham. © Cartwright High School's Winter Carnival was held on Friday, February 23 with ideal weather conditions. An innovation this year was the election of a Carnival King and two consorts and so the carnival was officially open- ed by our first Carnival King - Neil 'McLaughlin and his two prince's Bill Woods and Ken Crawford. Each re- ceived recognition in the form of appropriate gifts. During the noon hour many of the students with snowmobiles enjoyed a cross country trek. On Friday evening, Feb. 23, the Annual Heart Fund Dance was held at the Recreation Centre, Black- stock. The musical group Shade donated their services as their contribution to the Heart Fund canvass and provided 'some, very good music for the large crowd in attendance. The high light of the evening was the selection of Miss Heart and her two princesses. Each of the girls gave a short speech on the work of the Heart Foundation and were judged on their speech, appearance, poise and sin- | . cerity. Chosen as this year's Heart Queen was Terry Robinson who was crowned by last year's Miss Heart, Jaunita Amos. The two princesses' were Kathy Gunter and Peggy DeLong. Each of these girls received corsages and gifts from the merchants in Blackstock Port Perry and Oshawa. This year's Heart Fund collection has been success- ful and although all contri- butions have not yet been received, it is expected that the total for the canvass and profit from the dance will be in excess of $800.00. The students wish to thank the - people in the community for their continued support of this worthwhile charity work. Remember contribu- tions can still be made!
