The Fifth Annual Legion Hockey Tournament for Pee Wee teams came off with out a hitch. The local Tourna- ment which is sponsored by Legions Br. 419 Port Perry is to give the competative teams the right, to come out a winner, in either the Championship round or Consolations. And here again we had two wonderful championship games in the final round. Port Hope won the Consolation trophy, in handing Whitby a 4 - 1 defeat. In the Championship round, two well match teams turn on a real hockey game, and gave the spectators their money's worth. Orillia came out in the end to win 3 - 1 and were presented the Legion Br. 419 Championship trophy. Three Members of the Local Legion Br. 419 Port _ Perry were on hand to present the trophies and crest to the boys of the Championship team and runner up club. They were Mr. Cliff Hutchinson, Mr. Mike Holozen and Mr. Allan Wackett. The most valuable players award The Joe Fowler Trophy was won by a Orillia lad, Barry Wilde. Barry on the day scored six goals and POV VV VV VV VV VV VV VV VV VV VV VV VV WV VV V-WN had three assists for a good days effort. Mr. Joe Fowler was present lo present Barry with this trophy. Con- gratulations. Game No. | Oshawa's Spur Canadians had there hands full from a band of inspired young boys on the Stone Real Estate Pee Wee B in Port Perry. The young "B" kids gave it everything they had but the bigger and heavier boys of Oshawa started days pro- ceedings with a 3-1 win. This was a close checking on hard skating game. Gerry Perig and Davy Cumming scored for Port. Jeff Wilson with two and Scott Mann had the other. Game No. 2 Whitby who won the Legion's Tournament last year got off to a bad start losing to Lindsay 3 - 0. The Trent canel system boys struck early and never looked back. Scoring for Lindsay were Larry Cewans, Greg Lafete as Steven Skurman. Game No. 3 The Port Legion Pee Wees came out with fire in their shooting eyes and gave Port Hope a sound licking 7 - 1. Barry Wilde had a fantastic game scoring 4 times and Stephen Hanga, Kewin Crother and Stuart Hammond each scored once. At no time were Orillia pressed to go all out. Game No. 5 This was the first game in the Consoltion trophy elim- inations and Whitby had all they could do in winning 5 - 2 over Stones Real Estate of Port Perry. The local lads were even after two periods 2 - 2 then the roof caved in and ~ Whibty went on to score three times in the last period. Game No. 6 The two early bird winders met and oh boy! The Oshawa Spur Canadians advanced to the Championship final with an impressive victory win- ning 11 - 0. Scoring for Oshawa were Scott Mann, Allan Kay, Tims Galt each with two, while Rick Wodin- sky, Jeff Pearce, Greg Solway, Jeff Wilson and Sam Durkie. ~ Game No. 7 In the second consolation elimination Port Hope han- ded the Newcastle a 2 - 1 defeat. Rick Evans with two for Port Hope while Brian Allen scored the only goal of the day for Newcastle. Game No. 8 Orillia had little trouble in defeating the local Legion club 8 - 1. We were good but the stronger Simpson Cycle Club of Orillia had it all. Bill Durrant, Allan Fentin and Barry Wilde each scored two. Bruce McDough, Bob Holden and Stuart Ham- mond all had one each. Paul Gibson had the lone tally for Port. Game No. 9 -- Consolation trophy Port Hope just got sronger as the day went on and came on to post a 4 - 1 win over Whitby. Both of these two clubs skated hard. But again the hard checkings paved way in winning. Robert Ryan had a hat trick while Rick Evans got the lone tally. Eddie Hayden scored the lone goal for Whitby. Game No. 10 -- The Br. 419 lLegion Championship Trophy Oshawa Spur Canadians were completely out playing the Orillia pee wees and scored late in the second period when Greg Doucette scored. This was a real championship battle as was in the two previous years when Port Perry were in the big one. This was, and is the top game in the tournament and Orillia finally came on in the final period too score 3 times and go on to win 3 - 1. Port Perry's first game in the 14th annual champion- ship series, which is spon- sored by Brampton Lions Club, will be played in Memorial Arena against St. Mary's at 1 p.m. sunday March 18. This is an elimination series. If Port Perry goes all the way our boys will play off for the championship at 5 p.m. Friday, March 23. Port has entered the series during every one of its fourteen years, but last year was the first time we won. Teams in the D class come from towns with less than 4,500 population. To win last year Port Perry had to defeat Walker- ton 3 - 2, Waterford 8 - 5, Listowell 10 - 2 and Delhi 4 - 3. Eighteen students entered posters of their own design.
