LStodens in mechanics contest » Port Perry High School auto mechanic students are brushing up their skills for' the fourth annual Chrysler Trouble Shooting Contest in Toronto, April 13. "The objecfive of this unique competition, which is sponsored by Chrysler Canada Ltd. and its dealers, is to encourage technically- minded secondary school students to pursue careers in automotive service," Ron W. Todgham, President, said in announcing the 1973 Chrysler Trouble Shooting Contest. Port Perry's team is sponsored by County Crysler in Bowmanville, "This exciting event is a unique, yet practical, ap- proach to the continuing problem of a shortage of qualified automotive service technicians. We have been highly gratified at the enthusiastic response this contest has elicited from educators and students alike," Mr. Todgham said. The first of 20 regional contests to be held in 17 major centres across Can- ada will be held in Windsor on April 9. The last will be held in Edmonton, Alta. on May 18. National Finals will be held in Winnipeg, June 18 - 20. Port Perry competes April 13 in Toronto. Since its inception in 1970 as a regional contest which drew entries from 14 schools, the Trouble Shooting Contest has developed into a recog- nized national competition that this year has attracted student teams from more than 300 secondary and vocational schools across the country. A record 312 teams have registered - for. this year's event, which will include a regional contest in Thunder Bay, Ontario for the first time. Each participating school selects two automotive stu- dents for its Trouble Shoot- ing team. The regional and national competitions con- sist of written examinations followed by practical mech- anical tests. Each team is assigned a new car that has been deliberately tampered Police raids betting shop A Peterborough man is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court next month to face six charges as a result of a raid carried out by two police departments in Lindsay on Tuesday. Four members of Lindsay Police Department and two members of the Ontario Provincial Police Anti-Gam- bling Squad raided Lindsay's off track betting shop on Kent Street, West and seized a quantity of records and documents. The teams race the clock to locate and diagnose the malfunctions and get their cars repaired and running. The written exam counts for 40 per cent of a team's final score and the practical test 60 per cent. Winners of each regional contest ad- vance to the National Finals. This year's contestants will be competing for a share of more than $50,000 in scholarships, trophies, tool sets and automotive com- ponents such as engines and transmissions for their schools. Scholarships total- ling $6,000 are awarded to winners of the National Finals. Each team that makes it to the finals also receives a complete set of tools and an assortment of automotive compor nts for its school. Entries by province in the 1973 Trouble Shooting Con- test include: British Colum- bia 20; Alberta - 30; Saskatchewan - 11; Manito- ba -9; Ontario - 159; Quebec - 59: Nova Scotia - 12; New Brunswick - 11; and Prince Edward Island - 1. Dave Pentland of Port Perry and Earl Trewin of Blackstock will represent 'this area in the competition. Will receive little benefit from Regional Government The Durham Federation of Agriculture (DFA) has told the provincial government that they 'are displeased with the lack of importance shown for the basic industry of Agriculture in your (regional government)¢pro- posals." This comment came in the strongly worded regional government brief the Agri- cultural group plans to submit to Queen's Park. Another sentiment expres- sed in the report is that "generally, farmers will receive little benefit from Regional Governmenf . . . rural areas will have little influence on the thinking of urban municipalities." According to the brief, the Discuss municipal employees Port Perry councillor Grant McDermott is not particularly thrilled with the quality of work the village is getting out of some of its employees. Mr. McDermott was one of two councillors who voted against a raise, which the employees will get next July. One of the reasons he gave for opposing the raise was his dissatisfaction with the amount of work some of the. men are said to perform. He repeated his concern at the March 27 meeting of council. In language which may be considered a little too strong for this newspaper to quote the councillor indicated that he is getting sick and tired of some employees lack of dedication to duty. He did not name the workers he is concerned about. A former White House aid has written a book of advice for politicians and other bureaurocrats. Its called "If in doubt mumble." However, they state "we have not received any correspondence on Reg- ional Government in the past two years" from Queen's Park. The first recommendation in the DFA brief warns the provincial government that "failure of governments to retain good agricultural land will mean higher food costs." The Durham far- mers' brief urges the introduction of a Land Use Plan for the Province "This," says the brief, 'should have been done long ago." The brief also argues strongly that Oshawa must not be allowed to extend its present boundaires." Like the brief prepared by Darlington Township, the DFA indicated that '"'much RALPH FAIRMAN 1967 CHEVROLET IMPALA, 2 door hard top V-8, automatic, p.s., p.b., radio, white Moss green walls, wheel discs. exterior with black interior. The retention of large wooded areas and swamp lands in order to maintain a sound water level is also stressed by the Durham Federation's brief. They urge the government of Ontario to purchase such lands or "compensate owners for retining land for this purpose." Item Three in the brief states "farmers have been paying unfair property taxes for many years." The OAPADS study was quoted, estimating a rise of 25 percent in property taxes in Darlington Township. 'The Ontario Government must change the (tax) structure," says the brief, "and base it more on the ability . . . to pay." Manning to give the advantages in the Oshawa Region over the Victoria cost as he saw them. Mr. Manning stated the generous hospital grants such as the $112,000 recently given to Ross Memorial in Lindsay, Lakeview Manor, Beaverton and the up to date road system were some of the examples of the forward thinking in the East of Metro Region. Many questions were asked in an attempt to determine whether Brock should go to Victoria or the Oshawa Region. Most of the questions were replied to by Dr. Dymond. A standing vote was asked for by chairman Don Hadden with about 85 per cent favouring the Oshawa Region over Vic- toria County.
