Human growth and Development Council The Human Growth and Development Council is a volunteer group of interested ratepayers and teachers in Northumberland , and Dur- ham Counties. The Council was formed in the Fall of 1971 in response to a concern for the number of young people turning to drugs and alcohol Claude Fitzgibbon, Port of the Council since its 'beginning. School Board members and officials, rep- resentatives from the Child- ren's Ad Society. Health Unit. Ministerial Association. Recreation Committees, School Committees and others have attended the meetings reg ularly. Parents. teachers and students have attended meetings of interest to them. The Council first had a series of meetings with Ministry of Education Offi- cials and two workshops. From this came the ap- proach that the most effec: tive way to help young people cope with these problems was to help them become more understanding of themselves. their strengths, biases, and skills in decision making. the Council then set out 4 objectives 1. To develop a Kinder- garten Grade 13 curri- culum that would stress decision-making and atti tude formation. 2. To encourage in-service training of teachers so that the curriculum guidelines will be understood and implemented. 3. To encourage community imvolvement in the work of the Council. Ay) JL. The objectives of the Council are being met in that a -curriculum has been developed for Kindergarten to Grade 3 and in-service training sessions have been held for these teachers. A committee is working on extending this curriculum to the next levels. Recent meetings of the Council have emphasized remediation in that various agencies including the Men- tal Health Clinic have described their role in the community. The community has been invited to participate in council meetings and each principal is encouraged to discuss the curriculum guidelines with the parents. The curriculum guidelines are organized under 10 headings: Decision Making. Feel ings. Health, Orientation, Relationships. Safety. Sex- uality. Tolerance. Vocat- ional Awarness. Each section is approac- hed through physical. social and emotional considera- tions. It is intended that many of the topics will be integrated with regular sub- jects while others will be introdced through discus- sion. role playing and other techniques. Dr. Maureen Joy of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education is to be the speaker at the next meeting of the Human Growth and Development Council. This meeting is at 7:30 Monday. April 30th at the Northum- berland and Durham County of Education Board , Cobourg, and all those interested are invited to attend.
