Dear Editor: I wish to congratulate the photographer who took the picture of the Town Hall that appeared in the Star's edition of Wednesday, May 16, 1973. He showed us a building somewhat neglec- ted and shoddy but one that still maintains a dignity that cannot be denied and which is characteristic of most true 'Victorians' no matter into what poor cir- cumstances they may fall. It is unfortunate that Councils through the years did not 'keep up' the re- pairs. Most of us would probably have felt that if the building were rented it would be necessary to keep it sound and never, for a minute, think that the oppo- site was happening and I think it is rather shocking for us to find now that this is the situation: If the building were re- furbished, one can picture how magnificent it could be. How many have seen Tor- onto's St. Lawrence Square and how elegant it now is after renovation? How many recently read in the Globe and Mail of the scar- city of REAL bricks? And yet this area is considering disposing of a REAL brick building which is also an The Editor, Port Perry Star, Dear Sir: Re: Borelian Review "A critical review, accord- ing to my dictionary, should be "an attempt at objective judging so as to determine both merits and faults. In my opinion, to say a play "stunk" is not dis- cussing merits and faults, and certainly is being much less than diplomatic. Surely Joan Godley and all the cast of "The Dear Departed" deserve something better for their efforts than those unkind words. Mr. James Elliot in his contest winning essay on PHONE 985-2581 ORIGINAL TOWN building: I realize the decision 'to retain or destroy is a diffi- cult one but I believe it is time for expert opinion on redesign of interior, reno- vation of exterior and cost, -along with estimates of cost of upkeep. Perhaps office space could be included and the auditorium used for small receptions or meet- ings of which Port Perry seems to have so many. Craft centres have been mentioned and who knows what needs Regional Government may bring. Last but not least this building is in keeping with the surrounding architec- ture of the corner. Sometimes we have to spend a little more to keep the '"'aged" going but are they not worth it? Even the "new" Ontario Place is being run on a deficit, ac- cording to the media and I suppose we all contribute to that. My vote would be to try to retain the building that supplied a place for enter- tainment for the town's pioneers and later for those of the "depression" years. Remember those movies -- was it for a nickle? However, if this old "Vic- torian" must be laid to rest, please let's retain the site's original purpose as a place for people by keéping it an Deserved better for efforts Our Hometown Newspaper says that "community weeklies are more home- spun, reflective, and easy going." In another place he says 'its appeal stemmed from the fact it featured ordinary people from ordin- ary places doing ordinary things." Could our hometown newspaper reporter not have kept this in mind when reviewing The Dear Depar- ted and given, to those involved constructive critic- ism, and encouragement to go on to bigger and better things? We have been gifted with a great new building at the waterfront, which, I am sure can handle any functions or- activities that cannot be handled in any of the other auditoriums 'in town. "Old Town estimate, let us cut his figure to $25,000.00. Now let us take $100.00 and give the Town Hall a nice burial and take the remaining $24,900.00 and use it for a down payment on.some new water system, and be pre- pared to protect our other buildings in town which now serve a useful purpose. I fail to see how anyone could think of spending money on an old building like this when we need so many other things, (like a new well). I think our past and present councils have slipped up badly in not being prepared to handle a situation like the one that aa Ii 400 BIRmigy SALe) came up this past weekend, and now to think they even consider saving a building which really hasn't even any architectural beauty is beyond reasoning. In closing I would say to our council, let the Histori- cal Society save what, they can afford and come on fellows get on to more im- portant business, (like a new well). , Sincerely, Ray Penney hd HAN 17) IRR 040 D FIRST AID KIT SCALE LIRA): ) S i 4 4 4 CUSTOMER Lo AE 99 THIS WITH THIS WITH THIS COUPON mm COUPON COUPON MLL i Fray See Stores omit Savordon riders Soa Coupth goud at reerier: T---- BONUS |" ADORN 25%: LISTERINE ARRID A ) 25% MORE OFFER .
