The camp has been set up in Poplar Park at the south end of town. Mr. Ken Jackson, Presi- dent of Flamingto Pastries, explained to the STAR that he was Big Brothers Organization through a labour lawyer during labour negotiations a couple of years ago. Big Brothers try to provide adult male companionship for fatherless boys. Last year Mr. Jackson arranged for five 'little brothers' to spend a few days on his boat running between Bobcaygeon and Peterborough. The boys apparently enjoyed the outing, but Mr. Jackson felt that being confined to a boat was too restricting for youngsters. "It just came to Rebekah Meeting The district meeting of District #8, Oshawa East, was held in the Oddfellows & Rebekah Temple on June 27th at 3 p.m. There were 27 past noble grands present, representing Osh- awa #3, Heather (Orono), Beehive (Bowmanville) and Maybelle (Port Perry). Gan- araska (Port Hope) was not represented. The mew District Deputy President, sister Alhpa Sa- mells, was presented with her collar by sister Pearl Peacock, P.D.D.P. of Osh- awa #3. Sister Samells assumed her new position and ex- pressed her thanks for the honour bestowed on her. She also brought greetings from the new President of the Rebekah Assembly, Sister Margaret Duckworth, and told of her ob,. tives for the coming year. The dates for the respec- tive installations were rati- fied by those present. After the business meet- ing, an intersting and en- tertaining program, consist- ing of vocal and instrumen- tal selections, was put on by Sister Samell's grand- sons, John & David Mackie, and Craig & Todd Bailey of Oshawa. A lovely buffet supper was provided by Maybelle Lodge, preceded by a few games of card bingo. introduced to the brothers' from Toronto to enjoy one week vacations in Port 12] me," he says, 'that this tent idea would be better for the kids, because you know where they are and you can plan more activities for them." In addition to the large tents, one for the kitchen and the other for a dormi- tory, the boys have full run of the 50 acre park and use of the swimming pool. They enjoy a hike in the bush south of Port Perry, a win- dow shopping tour of down- town, a ride on Mr. Jack- son's boat over Lake Scugog and a tour of the company's butter tart plant on Simcoe St. Each boy will take home a package of tarts. The company has pur- chased the tents which are fireproof and guaranteed for 15 years. "This program will carry on as long as I am connected with Flamin- go Pastries," says Ken Jackson. Mr. Jackson remembers having some problems during his own childhood and says he is aware of the fact that childhood problems did not cease to exist just because he grew up. He has raised one boy and a girl of his own. A second son died in his teens. "I've always been interes- ted in kids," he says. The boys are being supervised by Mr. Claus Wienick of Toronto. Fla- mingo has hired Mrs. Clara Warren of Port Perry to cook for the camp. "The only thing missing," say the little brothers, "is a tent full of little sisters to tease." The public is invited to visit the camp at any rea- sonable time. VV VV Summer playground programme " School is out and sum- mer time is finally here.
