Scugog Island and area news Our sympathy is extended to the family of Mrs. Bea- trice. Demara who passed away last week after--a lengthy illnegs. Her cheerful smile and happy outlook on life will certainly be missed by all those who knew her. We are pleased to hear Mrs. Norma Crowell is out of hospital but sorry to hear Mrs. Geo. Freeman Sr. has been admitted as her heart has been acting up. Mrs. Emma Stephen is staying for a week at the home of her daughter Mrs. Bonnie Gerrow. We are pleased to hear she has recuperated quite well from her surgery, is gaining weight and hopes she will soon be able to return to her home in Estavan, Sask. We were pleased to wel- come several visitors at "Grace" church on Sunday. Rev. Pogue explained the order of service as there is no S.S. during the summer. As this is holiday time and there seems to be a move- ment toward more leisure time he discussed the effect and the findings of a study being made as to what people really do with this extra time. It has been found that 22 percent really did things to derive plea- sure, 40 percent just killed time, 28 percent made an effort to hold a second job, 6 percent did welfare or gave a voluntary aid, 4 percent did nothing. Another study of children 3 to 6 years over a period of 10 months in a large nursery. They were given a choice of doing their activities and asking for cookies and milk at the regular periods or doing little jobs for which they would receive payment to- kens to use in purchasing their repast. It was learned by the end of the year 3; of the children had chosen the earning method. Work is the right of society. During the sermon Rev. Pogue took a study of the Bible Prophets, who so often condemned society as it was then. The prophets in each kingdom advised or encouraged the king as to his chance of success in war or other ventures, most of them were head of a cult. Most of the really great prophets were not head of a cult and were not sooth- sayers. The moral saw the climate of their land and spoke out about it.. They said God is love but also demands standards of morality. Man should learn to do what the Lord wanted. They 'had concern for justice for all individuals. To-day there are still pro- phets who see both sides of the coin. Martin Luther King could be considered one who also had his dreams and looked forward to a better day. The "Grace" U.C.W. has chosen a committee of Mrs. Joan Aldred, Mrs. Pat Scugog Island Women's The July meeting of the Scugog Island Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Trudi Zingg at Cedar Shores. The business part of the meeting was held on the lawn and opened with the Ode and Collect. Tell about your vacation plans was the roll call and was answered by 12 mem- bers and 1 visitor Nina Creamore from England. Motto-work hard but take time to relax with com- ments of how to do just that was given by Helen Hortop. A first aid course for the fall was discussed and as many were interested. Scugog, Port Perry, left 'early Sunday morning to take part in a two week basic training course in the maritimes.
