Sept. 19th, 1973 -- 13 Honor scout leaders at banquet by Doreen Kendall On Saturday evening September the 15th, the Pine Ridge Scouters Club hosted the First Annual Friendship and Appreciation Night Dinner & Dance. Approxim- ately 130 special guests, Scouters, Friends and sup- porters of the Boy Scouts gathered at the Blackstock Recreation Centre for a banquet & Dance and to honour some outstanding leaders in the movement. Mr. Walter Welts was chairman for the evening Rabies (continued and in the last three months, 15 cases, involving seven cows, seven foxes and one dog. But, he added, 16 people have taken the vaccine in the last two and one-half months. "Rabies," he said, "is certainly well established in the wildlife and farm ani- mals get it from wild animals. What we fear is the spill over into humans." His advice, therefore, is for people to leave wild animals alone. "That is one thing people haven't learned." he said. "Skunks are not house pets so don't pick them up if you find them sick in the woods." Only once has it been confirmed that a squirrel had rabies, he said, and that was in London, -Ont. He recommends that people leave them alone too. He points out that it might be a pretty serious decision to make if one is nipped by the pet squirrel. Did it have rabies? The Mother Auxiliary of the Cartwright prepared a marvellous dinner for the guests and the Rangers from Blackstock served, these dedicated Mothers and the girls were very suitably thanked by Mr. Paul Saul- nier. Following dinner Mr. Peeter Kalleste P.F.E. on behalf of the Chief Scout of Canada, the Rt. Hon Roland Mitchner presented long Service awards for faithful, and efficient service to the following: 5 years but less than 10 -- Mr. Pat Porrill 1st Cartwright. Walter Welts 1st Cartwright, Josie Hamilton 1st Cartwright and Larry Kendall 1st Scugog. 10 years but less than 15 Lloyd Par- liament 1st Cannington, Jean Adams 1st Cartwright, Doreen Kendall 1st Scugog. The highlight of these pre- sentations was the 30 year Service pin presented to Stan Ploughman Port Perry, the entire assembly gave JERRY JACKMAN for Stan a much deserved standing ovation and Stan's wife was presented a lovely bouquet of flowers. "I'm sure I speak for all who were present when I say Stan is an inspiration to all leaders and has helped mold the outstanding character of many fine young men of this area. Well done Stan and thanks from us all." Enge, 24, of Ottawa Street received minor cuts and bruises and a passenger in his '55 Chev van complained of pain fol- lowing an accident last Sat- urday near Kinmount. No one was hurt seriously enough to require hospital treatment. Police believe Enge was driving east on Highway 503 about 5:20 Saturday after- noon when he pulled out to pass a 67 Chev driven by Barbara Wingate of Toronto, just as the Toronto woman started to make a left turn. Damage is estimated at about $1,300. MAYOR of the new Township of Scugog District Commissioner from Oshawa. ' Reeve Lawrence Mal- colm, then introduced the Speaker for the evening Mr. Walter Beath who spoke on . his position as Chairman of the new Regional Govern- ment. Just before the dinner gave way to dancing Mr. Walter Welts, President of the Pine Ridge Scouters Club was thanked by Stan Ploughman for his fine or- ganizational work in pre- paration for this most enjoyable evening.. Eveyone enjoyed the remainder of the evening dancing to the music of the Abernathy Family Bank, an extremely talented local group.
