Blackstock, Ontario 986-4201 PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday. Sept. 19th, 1973 -- 29 Reform school - for horses "You can't," said Pete Obstfeld as he tried to per- suade a perky thoroughbred stallion to hold still for the photgrapher," tell it like it is about these fellows." From somewhere outside a mare whineed and the stallion began a fresh round of activity as Pete con- tinued, "If you did it would be an obscene story." Horses, it would appear, have strong natural instincts and teaching them to control these instincts so they can be ridden easily is a job for an expert. Pete Obstfeld is an expert. The 23 year old Port Perry man worked as a blacksmith since leaving P.P. High a few years ago. Last year he rented a barn and coral near Myrtle and spent his two week vacation giving deli- quent horses a crash course in good manners. Soon after he obtained a 75 acre farm south of town on High- way 12 and opened a full time reform school for horses. Not that all the animals at Pinewood Place are delin- quent. Pete owns a horse of his own, and a few of the farm's 14 stable residents are just boarders. But some have been sent so they can be taught to behave. The teachers (Pete has two employees) use a com- bination of firm dicipline and genuine affection. The horse has to be taught that he must do as he is told, but at the same time he must know that he will not be hurt if he behaves. For example, Pete ex- plains that you don't just walk up to a horse that has never been trained to a bit and shove one in his mouth. You would cut his mouth. Election Day -- October 1st PUBLIC NOTICE All Candidate - Meetings e Thursday, Sept. 20 Scugog Municipal Hall e Friday, Sept. 21 e Monday, Sept. 24 Reach Municipal Hall, Manchester (School Board candidates will not be in attendance.) o Wednesday, Sept. 26 Greenbank Community Centre Latcham Centre, Port Perry All Meetings start at 7:30 p.m. You will have an opportunity to hear and meet with all candidates for the offices of Mayor, Regional and Local Councillors at Large, Ward Councillors, Public and Separate School Trustees. These meetings are organized in the public interest by the Cartwright, Port Perry, Reach, Scugog Ratepayers' Association and the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry. PETE OBSFELT gets ready to take this handsome mare through its paces at his boarding house for horses south of Manchester. First the handlers at Pinewood Place use a bosal, an arc of heavy rope which fits over the animals head and causes brief, minor, . unpleasantness unless the horse does what is wanted of him. In this way he learns to obey commands without being cut. When the horse has learned to follow instruc- tions he is then allowed to wander loose in a coral with a bit in his mouth. By the time a rider gets on him he is used to both the bit, and obeying commands. Because horses are head- strong critters, Pete says the trick is to get the horse to do what he is told while at the same time making him think it is his own idea. The bosal makes it convenient to do what is expected. When riding, Pete at first lets the horse have its own way, except that everytime it wants to change direction he gives the appropriate com- mand. The animals soon connect the command with the action and get the idea. DO IT YOURSELF! The method must work. Some top horsemen trust Pinewood with their ani- mals, including J.J. Fleming who has left his stallion Bronze Prince there for training. Bronze Prince is a thoroughbred stud. He is the son of Princess Teddy who in turn is the son of Teddy's Sister. Teddy's Sister was outstanding runner several years ago who was known in her time as the queen of the half milers. You would hardly trust a horse like that to just an ordinary blacksmith.
