Answering a questioner at a meeting of the Men's Canadian Club of Bowman- "ville on Wednesday night, he said an Owen Sound radio station spokesman had advised him that the council of Durham had advised them Durham or their town of Durham." Mr. Beath said it was "tremendous'" that the people of the new region had picked Durham for its name. MANNING STAYS The choice that rankled Oshawa Mayor James Potti- cary was William Manning. Mr. Manning has been Clerk-treasurer of Ontario County since 1947 and council picked him as Chief Administrator at a salary of $32,000 a year. Two other men were con- sidered for the job; Secre- tary to the Chairman of Metro Toronto John Kruger and Frank Markson, Finance Commissioner of the City of Oshawa. OSHAWA WALKS OUT When Mr. Manning was chosen over the Oshawa applicant Mayor James Potticary charged that the rest of the region was ganging up on Oshawa. Then he picked up his marbles and walked out. Six other Oshawa councillors went with him. They returned a half hour -.; later after council agreed to let the press back in for the debate so reporters could see how poorly Oshawa was. being treated. Councillors voted for thee 3 choice of Chief Administra- tor by ballot. Three scruti- neers counted the ballots, including one scrutineer from Oshawa. Some members of council later denied that there had been any "bloc voting," against Oshawa as Mayor Potticary had charged. "I think the Oshawa group was being a bit foolish," Scugog councillor Reg hose said later.
