Council has been anxious to move the Port Perry Yacht Club from its location in the middle of Palmer Park to a less obtrusive spot. Magazine ripp - off operating in Village + Lisa Stewart of Scar- borough describes herself as, "naturally shy." To help, "overcome by natural shyness," Lisa is talking to everyone in Port Perry she can get hold of and trying to sell them magzines. It is the oldest con line in the business. Door to door magazine salesmen always claim to be students (even if they are 40 years old) and in a contest. And they are never really selling anything - they are just gathering points for the contest. They get points by selling magazines. Lisa Stewart needs "10,000 points to win a $500 tour". The five hundred dollars is usually just the commission , on the magzine sales, but itis easier to get signatures ont he dotted line from people who will, "help me out," thanitis to get people to buy something. The line given the STAR receptionist in a well re- hearsed sing song voice went something like this. "Hi, my name is Lisa and I am a student on a tour." | HOUSE LEAGUE | Midgets Zering 4: Haines 1; Kroonenburg had a pair for Zering and single went to Rahm and Wackett. Scoring for Haines was Vancamp. Peels 6; Emmerson 2. Scoring for Peels was Hadley with a hat trick, Jones with two and Hall with _ one. Page and Knight did the scoring for Emmersons. ALLIS CHALMERS rugged, dependable 8 H.P. two stage Snow Throwers. Free chains' and early order discount before Dec. 1, 1973. It helps me get over my natural shyness. How do you think I am doing so far? While I am on my tour I am competing with other girls in a contest for $500." The sing song voice then goes on to explain about the 10,000 points and how many points she gets for each magazine the "victim" would like to receive and ends with the plea to help in the contest. If someone wants a maga- zine subscription then buying it from Lisa Stewart is probably as good a way as any togetit. She may or may not take a trip to some place other than Port Perry, and she may or may not actually be a student, but she is at least earning a living. However, if you have no intention of ordering a mag- azine subscription do not be fooled by the plea for help pitch. Lisa Stewart is a magazine salesman - nothing more and nothing less. It's the kind of deal where DEAN WATSON The consultants who pre- pared the town's official park's plan suggested that the club move to the old railway right of way and council acted accordingly. After several months of neg- otiations the club has come up with plans for a new club and council was all ready to sign an agreement with the Yacht people. Then the Trent Canal peo- ple got wind of the plans and objected. It seems that when the Federal government" gave Port Perry use of the land it was on condition that the old railway be used for park purposes only. The Trent Canal Systems Authority has used that con- dition to back up its attempt to prevent the Yacht Club from moving to the site north of the arena. ' If the canal people succeed it will be a problem for the new Scugog Council to settle. Port Perry ceases to exist in two weeks.
