« Former Scugog councillors honoured About 100 people packed the Scugog Island Commun- ity Hall January 10 to honour the 28 past members of the old Township of Scugog council who are still living. The Township's 1973 Reeve, Cliffton - Crowell, pointed out that to some people the recent amalga- mation of + Cartwright, Reach, Port Perry and Scugog might look as if the island community has been joined by its neighbours, but nevertheless Scugog as the residents know it no longer exists. As each former councillor +n attendance was pre: sented with a copy of the book, "A History of Ontario County," the councillor shared some of his mem- ories. It was learned that the first councillors were paid $5 a year for their work. The townships first snowplow was so weak that men had to be hired to go ahead with shovels and cut the snow drifts down to sizes the plow could handle. One past member told of a time he was part of a group of vouth's shovelling all day in front of the plow. Near the end of the afternoon some- one went into a house and came out with a jug of cider. "When we finished drinking that we hardly needed the plow at all." Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kerry visited Mrs. Ruby Rogers on Saturday and also a called on Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Ashton of Ashburn. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wilson and family and Mrs. Mary Wilson of Uxbridge were dinner guests on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Irwin. Mr. Bill Anderson, Kenny, Donna, Linda and Karen went to Oakwood on Sunday to visit Grandma Anderson and Sadie Robinson who are leaving for a month's vaca- tion in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ander- son have arrived home from New Brunswick. On Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Sanderson and girls visited her parents Mr. and M rs. Jas. Camp- sell. On Saturday evening the family visited Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson at their home to help Norman cele- brate his birthday and on Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson visited friends in Oshawa. Mrs. M. Bailey was in hospital for a few days but is feeling stronger now. The U.C.W. met last Tues- day at the home of Mrs. H. Kerry. All had an enjoy- able meeting. We were pleased to have Mrs. E. Tripp and Mrs. H. Geer with us. Mrs. Geer was quite taken by surprise when she was presented with a life membership to U.C.W. and a gift from the group. There will be church ser- vice at Epsom on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Rev. Scott in charge. An invitation is extended to all to attend a congrega- tional meeting of Epsom Utica and Goodwood Charges at Epsom, Wed., January 23 at 8 p.m. Mr. Scott is anxious to meet all the people in the area. Come and make him feel welcome in this new land of his choice. There will be an annual meeting of Epsom Goodwood and Utica at Utica, 7:30, January 30th.
