Everyone who has visited our Arena within the last few months is aware "of the deterioration of the building. This present structure has served us all well for the past 20 odd years, but I feel that the time has come to replace it with a new one. I would like to draw your attention to the condition of the building at the present time. A considerable sum of money has been spent in the past few years on repairs and without those repairs the building would have been condemned. Extensive re- pairs are now needed for the seats, puck boards, roof and floor of the Arena. Two Consulting Engineering firms were asked to give estimates on these repairs. One firm refused to give an estimate as they felt it was not feasable to repair the present structure. The other would do the work but refus- ed to guarantee the safety of the repairs. In view of the above facts, with regard to the safety of the structure, I Graduates Brian Lee son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Lee, Black- stock graduated from Cen- tral Agricultural College on Friday May 10th with a degree in Agricultural Busi- ness Management. 272 Scugog Road Wagg Bros. Texaco mm licenced mechanics wm REPAIRS TO ALL MAKES 985-7262 feel that the construction of a new arena is imperative. Let us not wait until our present one is condemned. But what of the size of the new structure and design? Would one pad suit us or are two pads more feasable? By erecting a single pad we would have a nice new structure which everyone would be proud of, but would it meet the needs of the people who live in this area? Unfortunately the organiza- tions who use the arena have not had enough ice "time available to them and have had to rent facilities in other localities. There are several teams who only get one hour ice time per week and many figure skaters who do not get enough practice time and couldn't go elsewhere due to distances to travel and the costs involved. Due to the ever expanding population in this area we can expect further demands for additional ice time which we could not supply with the present facilities. Perhaps a twin pad arena in our case would be the answer. One of the advantages in favour of building a twin pad arena is that the increased strength of the plant would be large enough to support two ice surfaces in the winter and one in the summer. This would allow us to offer clubs, organizations and individ- uals facilities to carry out more complete programs for sports, recreation, instruc- tion and entertainment. Another advantage would be that our extra ice time would be a commodity which we could sell to other com- munities that have inade- quate ice time for their needs. These reasons have made concerned people in our area weigh sincerely the pros and cons for a new arena with adequate facilities for our future. Let's not wait until our present facilities are condemned. We must start now to ensure that the new TWIN PAD ARENA will be ready when we need it! S. Their presentation indicated the need because of the projected population growth and the degenerating state of the present arena. schools and the general pub- lic, the ice time is at a premium and a lot of rev- enue in ice rentals could be made if more ice were available. But the rest of the, public must be considered. Not everyone plays hockey or is -interested in skating. Many people in the area are travel- to swim and we believe there is a need for a pool in our own arca. Our children are being bussed elsewhere for swim- ming lessons, pool parties and outings from schools, church. groups and clubs ete., and how many individ- uals would make regular use of an indoor pool winter and summer but find it inconven- ient to travel." IFor these reasons we feel that if taxpayers' money is going to be spent it should be spent on a Sports Complex which includes a pool to fulfill the needs of all the people in the area. Yours sincerely, (Mrs) R. Drew, Secretary-Treasurer, Scugog Chamber of commerce. ling to Uxbridge and Oshawa The Directors of the Cham- ber gave their support to this presentation and appointed two Diréctors to the 'Build the New Arena Committee'. . Sparked by the June 12th article in the Port Perry Star which indicated that all the organizations involved with this committee were cam- paigning for a two-pad arena, the Chamber of Com- merce Directors met and discussed our policy on the matter. According to our recent Feasibility Study the pro- jected population growth for the area will be 11,232 per- manent residents by 1986. It is obvious that with this in mind and the present condi- tion of our arena that a new complex is needed. With the Minor Hockey Association, the Figure Skating Club, the \ WHAT DO YOU THINK ?
