Se FR 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1974 The new tennis courts at the lakefront received their initiation last weekend when the local tennis club Van Camp Construction Juniors have entered the Ontario Amateur Softball Association semi-finals by virtue of two straight vict- ories over Fenelon Falls. On Thursday Aug. 22nd at the waterfront park the local Jrs. played host to Fenelon Falls Jrs. and defeated them in one of the wildest games played at the new park. The visitors took advan- tage of some poor fielding plays by the local boy and ranup an early 6-0 lead after 2 innings. The Van Camp club nar- rowed the gap to 6-5 after six innings, but again the loose fielding allowed the visitors to take a 10-5 lead in the seventh. It looked like the Juniors were headed for there first defeat in the play-offs, but a big five runs in the eighth inning tied the score and set the stage for a dramatic winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a key infield single by Brian Smith scoring Grant McLaughlin from third base. Rob Monro lead the hitters with a triple and two singles, Grant McLaughlin had three singles, Steve Cochrane a single and a double. Louie Williams was the winning pitcher while John Sheehey was the loser for Fenelon Falls. On Sunday Aug. 25th the two teams played the second " RE HR yi] "(1 fife rr held a tournament. The courts are very impressively situated overlooking Lake Scugog and are a real Juniors advance to Semi-finals game of the series in Fenelon Falls. The VanCamp team made no mistakes in this game as they jumped on the starting pitcher Grant Sheehey for an 8-0 lead after three innings and were never in to much trouble as they went on to a 11-5 victory to sweep the series in two straight games. Rollie Skinner pitched a strong game for the Port Perry squad and allowed only 5 hits and didn't allow a hit after the fifth inning. Ken Davidson had a big day at the plate with a double and two singles, while Brent Heard, Grant McLaughlin, Rick Campbell, Steve Cotrark om Rollie Skinner all had two hits apiece. The most productive pastures have something extra in them this summer.
