"1,500 see thrill show at Fair Grounds Sat. About 1,500 people turned out Saturday night at the Port Perry Fair Grounds for P a show of Evel Kinevel style thrills. The Canadian Uniroyal Thrill Drivers were in town and put on a spectacular one and a half hour show of ramp jumps and other dare devil car tricks. Harry Zering, of Zering Pontiac Buick, and co-spon- sor of the event, said he # didn't think Kinevel's Sun- day jump had very much to do with the crowd that turned out for the event. "These guys were around before Evel Kinevel was," Mr.. Zering said. 'People have always been interested in this type of thing." Mr Zering also pointed out that they were driving Gen- & eral Motors products and this would be as close as they would be coming to Oshawa. "One incident that did slight ly mar the evening was when two old cars involved in ramp jumps got stick on top of each other gndbecanie stuck on the soft track. The two cars couldn't be removed until a large wreck- er was brought in after the show was completed. KoKo the Clown was prob- ably the star of the show in most people's eyes as he . tried to imitate some of the stunts in his Krazy Kar. Mr. Zering said the drivers are top professional and there is really very little danger of anyone being seri- ously hurt. All the stunt cars used were stock models and could be purchased by anyone at a dealership, Mr. Zering said. Scugog News We seem to have several ailing people on Scugog in- cluding Mr.a nd Mrs. Sam Arnold who are both in Port Perry Hospital. . ¥ Mr. Elwin Goose, a long time resident at the Foot of the Island has been in Osha- wa Hospital about 3 weeks and experiences some amount of suffering in the upper food passage. We trust he may find comfort and relief. - Mrs. John Edgar, also a north Island resident, who # has been employed at the Port Perry Hospital for quite i a time, is in the Toronto Western, following a heart attack. We hope for her a rapid recovery. Mr. Clarence Carter, also has had his heart surgery and is now in his period of 1 recuperation. The join U.C.W. meeting ) will be held to night at '""'Grace" Church. New members or guests are very welcome. ' The Women's Institute will meet Wednesday evening at the Island Hall, Sept. 18. We noted the beautiful display & they had at the fair. They are proving to be a very energe- tic group of ladies who sure get things done. There was a lengthy meet- ing after Service at 'Grace' church on Sunday. Needed repairs and landscaping were discussed. It was de- cided to start Sunday School next week September 15 as _ the children are getting » anxious and there are many new children in the area who are interested. The following Sunday, Sept. 22 there willbe an anniversary service at a patient in Toronto Western Manchester and there will be no service at '"Grace" in order that we may support the other church. But the following week, Sept. 27, plans are being formulated for an anniversary Service on Scugog. Letters and notice willbe sent out later. On Friday six ladies from the "Head" U.C.W. went to "foronto to assist with lunch after the funeral of Max Stichmann's mother. Manpower news Client registrations for employment at the Canada Manpower Centres in Osh- awa and Ajax for the month of August totalled 5,189. This total included 2,113 male and 3,076 female clients. While there was some increase in registrations in the clerical, sales, assembling and mat- erial handling occupations, student registrations drop- ped during the month. Considerable employment activity continued in the agricultural, construction and food catering industries, while some manufacturing plants encountered labour disputes and 'others were involved in union contract negotiations and gradual re- call of employees from an- nual vacations. A total of 637 persons were placed in employment dur- ing the month. The majority of placements occured in occupations connected with the manufacture of furni- ture, primary metal and non-metallic mineral pro- ducts, as well as in construc- tion, wholesale and retail trades, personal services and food service occupa- tions.
