Dean; THE EMPLOYEES & UNION SIDE OF THE Signed Proposes Utica sub-division Betore taking any action on a request for approval of a proposed subdvision east of Utica, Scugog councillors decided to take a first hand look at the site. Ken Murray of Stouffville presented two plans to council for the development of a 97 acre site. It is located off Reach Road 1A. One plan called for 58 houses on the site with each house having at least two Letter to editor (continued lend ten times the amount of money they have on deposit, when an individual has to pay interest on that "make believe money? 9. Why are not parents re- sponsible for the actions of their children to their 17th birthday? It was the case many years ago. E.G. Michell, H.Y.C.D. F lamingo Strike We would like to clear the air on a letter that the company president, Mr. Jackson sent to the employees, a copy of which was inserted in the local paper last week. Mr. Jackson made reference to untruths, innuendos etc. reported by the news media. We would like to make it quite clear any report made by the Union on behalf of the employees was the truth. Mr. Jackson also stated that the Union Committee rejected their last proposal, the first in seven weeks, and withdrew from the meeting. Again Mr. Jackson is misleading the community in this area. As it happened the Company's proposal was considered by the Committee. A counter offer by the Union was then presented to the Mediator. He then presented it fo the Company, who, after considering the offer, decided not to respond. At this time the Union again consulted with the Mediator, and he then decided that nothing further could be accomplished. Then the meeting was terminated. Therefore it was not the way Mr. Jackson tried to make the public believe. The Union does not walk out of meetings without consideration of proposals. Mr. Jackson mentioned the increases in terms of percentage. Of course, even an increase of 20c an hour would look great in percentages. Our wages were $2.20 per hour for 90 percent of the employees at the expiry of the old contract. Mr. Jackson has offered 70c over two years to 90 percent of the work force. This would only bring the top rate for these people to $2.90 per hour during the agreement. This offer has been flatly rejected by the employees. School students may be able to survive on this amount. They have no taxes coming out of their wages. It would serve the Company well not only to listen to the UnionCommitteebut to do more extensive research into rates being paid in the baking industry in general. These rates exceed $4.00 per hour. We are only asking just above the $3.00 figure. The employees would also like to point out that the company is very reluctant to move on a number of non-monetary matters such as a scheduled work week, seniority provisions. These items are often more important than money itself. We have now completed eight weeks of strike and are determined to fight to gain a satisfactory contract no matter what. . We gratefully appreciate the support of the few store owners who are refusing to sell Flamingo products, the New Democratic Party, other Local Unions, and the greater. percentage of the general public. Hopefully this letter will clear the minds of some of the public who have been misled by the company management. We would finally: ask the general public as whole to support the strikers in their dispute, stop and talk with us on the picket line for a first hand view of the situation and above all the truth! ] "BOYCOTT FLAMINGO PASTRIES PRODUCTS" Striking Employees of Flamingo Pastries and Teamsters Local 847 W. Overy - Business Representative The Ontario Riding New Democratic Party Association is helping to sponsor this statement in order that the Employees and the Union may have an equal opportunity to state their point of view. The NDP would like to suggest that readers seriously consider bo products and the stores selling them for the duration of the strike. ycotting Flamingo acres of land and costing between $125,000 and $150,000 al today's market price. The alternative plan called for 117 housing units, each with about one half acre of land and each costing about $75.000. , Speaking on behalf of Mr. Murray, Jim Wong of Stouff- ville said that an environ- mentalist, an engineer, a land surveyor and a land technician had studied the areca and the developer was well aware of the environ- mental problems of the area. Council informed Mr. Murray that amendments would have to be made to both the official plan and the zoning bylaw before any development could go ahead. Council will inspect the site during its next roads tour. Mr. Wong said the plan that called for 58 units would fit into the natural sur- roundings well and would also provide the township with more of a tax base.
