Newman, Resources to finance. the Conservation Authority Durham ignores province Since the province isn't paying any attention to the region of Durham's thoughts on the North Pickering Pro- ject, Durham has decided to end all communication with the province on the subject. The local councils will be asked to take the same action. Walter Beath, regional chairman has also been directed to seek an immedi- ate meeting with Premier Bill Davis on the project. The frustration of most of the council on this issue was evident as only four council- lors voted against this strongly worded motion. The province announced last week a final population target for .the new city Ajax Mayor Clark Mason said the Planning and Deve- lopment committee of the - region has attempted to be- come involved in the plan- ning of this area and have got absolutely nowhere. 'It was in utter frustration that the committee made this either irresponsible or desperate move to end com- munications," Mr. Mason said. "We have to try to get: somewhere". Coun. Alex Robertson of Pickering said the province is just ignoring Durham. "The province just keeps coming out with statements without - us - knowing any- thing," he said. Coun. Keith Ross of Osh- awa said the irresponsibility '""We are telling the province that if you won't be decent to us, we won't speak to you," Mr. Ross said. One of the few people opposing the motion was Scugog Mayor Lawrence Malcolm who said the region had misunderstood the Province's letters. Mr. Malcolm said that when the province has reviewed the project teams proposals, it will discuss them with the region. Whitby Mayor Desmond Newman said the region had meetings with five provincial ministers on the matter without any results. "I can't believe the government is taking these actions that are so arbitrary Minister of the Environment' for Ontario and M.P.P. for Ontario South, recently said that Provincial transitional financial assistance to the Region of Durham will be extended to 1976. Six hundred and sixty- seven thousand dollars is to - be granted to the Region in 1975 with an additional three hundred © and thirty-three thousand dollars in 1976.- Mr. Newman said that the add- itional grants are being made in recognition that the special problems of getting established do not cease for a" Region at the end of the first twelve months. "It is more than apparent that extending only twelve months special financial assistance to the Region would have placed a heavy relocation to larger quarters of the Central Lake Ontario office from Oshawa to Whitby. ' Region charges itself If the Durham Works De- partment wants something printed, it will have to pay the Durham Finance Depart- ment to have this work done. This is the result of a decision by regional council last week to institute a user's charge for printing for the various region's departments. "Do you want me to believe that the finance department works for Dur- ham and the Works Depart- ment for somebody else," Coun. * John Goodwin of 'Whitby wondered. Each department will be charged for the cost of paper per job, as well as, a per copy charge to recover the costs of the salaries, bene- fits, materials and supplies of the Finance department.
