February 3rd in the 4 to 2 victory at home, Wilbur got the Legionaires off to a flying start scoring after just 31 seconds of play as he banged in a pass from Bur- nett. Potts also drew an assist on the play. At the 4:52 mark, Wilbur scored his second goal of the night being 'Johnny on the spot' to rap in a Potts pass. Jobb who started the play was also credited with an assist. West Rouge scored at the 5:35 mark to narrow the margin 2to 1. The balance of the first period and the entire second period were score- less. Port held a definite territor- ial edge in play throughout the first two periods but were unable to capitalize on several good scoring oppor- tunities. With just 8 seconds elapsed in the third period, Menzies rifled a wrist shot by the goaltender on the long side. Durward and Kane drew assists. West Rouge again cut the margin to one with a goal at the 6:59 mark. Wilbur com- pleted the scoring, getting his hat trick at the 13:44 mark, as he scored a nifty goal set up on passes from' Potts and Brown. A good team effort kept the Legionnaires in command of February 4th back at West Rouge in one of the most exciting games of the season Port won 5 to 4 in overtime. Coach Potts started the excitment with a few wrink les in the line up. The players followed suit by playing good and bad inter- mittently. Brown produced a little excitment on his own by scoring a hat trick. West Rouge opened the scoring in the first period on a goal that was tipped at the the net. Port came back to take a 2 to 1 lead at the end of the second period on goals by Brown 'from Potts and Wilbur, and Parker from Storry and Tobin. West Rouge scored the only goal in the second period ond the teams went to the dressing rooms tied at two all. West Rouge came out hust- ling in the third period and banged in two goals to take a 4 to 2 lead. Burnett then back in the game. This set the stage for the Utica Flash to go into actior as he tied up the game on a pass from Burnett with just better than two minutes remaining .in regulation time. He then potted the winner early in the overtime period. With West Rouge pressing for the equalizer it remained for Menzies to save the day as he broke up a dangerous two on one inside our blue line as the game ended. PeeWees defeat Uxbridge February 7th at Uxbridge the PeeWee's got revenge for those earlier three league defeats as they blanked the home side 3 to 0 in the first game of the Group finals. Burnett got Port off on the right foot as he opened the scoring in the first period coming from behind the net and poking one into the corner. Kane drew an assist on the goal. Menzies froth Durward made it 2 to 0 in the second period as he put a pretty good move on their defence- man and let go a wrist shot that handcuffed the goal- tender. Wilbur finished off the scoring in the final period with Brown getting the assist. The four man deloncs of Burnett, Robinson, Jobb and BELARUS «. fOr rugged reliability Storry played a sound game and were very effective moving the puck out of their own end. Durward played a strong game at centre keeping Ux- bridges bit gun VanKessel under control most of the night. Good positional play and hustle by the whole team kept Uxbridge off the score sheet and enabled Port to keep the pressure on Ux- bridge in their own end for a good portion of the game. Franssen and Myers split the goaltending to earn the shut-out. Second game of this best of three Group Final is Thurs. in Port Perry, game time 7:30 p.m. Juveniles beat Uxbridge, On Thursday, January 30, the Grant Menzies Volvo boys hosted Uxbridge for their last encounter of the schedule and came out with a 4-2 win. Uxbridge tied the score again before the Volvo boys could go ahead to stay. it was Greg St. John who scored the third goal with Jerry Taylor and Doug - Bronson assisting. On Saturday, February 1, the Volvo boys travelled to Stouffville for their final schedule game to come home with a 9-1 loss. Play-offs for the Grant Men- zies Volvo Juveniles started against Newcastle. |. Malmont Farms played Newcastle at home on Feb. 7 and ended up with a three to one victory. This was the last game of the regular season with Newcastle and the record against them was three victories against one: defeat. In the first period, New- castle had the edge in play as Port were a little sluggish on their skates. The first period ended with no scoring. The Malmont gang started' the second period a little stronger, and opened the scoring at the 1:08 mark on a goal by. Phil Bower assisted by Russell Jones. One minute later, New- castle tied the score but from then on, the locals gained strength and took control of the game. The second period ended with the score tied. At the 4:29 mark of the third period, Paul Storry scored assisted by Alan: Jones and at the 8:18 mark Bob Horton scored assisted by Phil Bower. This ended the scor- ing for the game. Next Friday, February 14, Wednesday night in Ux- bridge, and back here, Thursday night last week and as there is just Uxbridge in our group to play, it should be a good series. the Malmont Atoms travel to Stouffville to play their last league game of the season. This should be one of the best games of the season, so lets have a big crowd show up to cheer the team to victory. Tournament - at High School This coming Saturday (February 15) Port Perry High School is hosting its 3rd annual Junior Boys Basket: ball Tournament. Games commence at 9:00 a.m. and run throughout the day with the Consolation final at 6:30 p.m. and the Championship at 8:00 p.m. Competing teams are Adam, Scott and Kenner "Collegiates from Peter- borough, Uxbridge, Henry Street (Whitby), Stayner, two teams from Cobourg and the Port Perry Juniors led by Phil Cochrane and Shawn Taylor. Port's team, coached by Mr. Roy Clarke, should be strong contenders to take the championship.
