This winter, according to the ministry. the ice forming on lakes and rivers is off to a poor start. Freezing tem- peratures necessary to form a strong ice cover have not materialized early enough throughout most of Ontario. "February's temperature® may suddenly drop, states the ministry report, but don't put your trust in the ice cover without first testing its strength before you travel over it. ; "Carefully check the depth: of the ice as you progress over it. alternate mild and cold spells of weather don't make for strong ice. If the ice is not thick enough to support you STAY OFF", The following table applies to clear, blue ice only. Less than 2' - STAY OFF; 2" - one person on foot; tear, snowmobile); 8" - 2'a-ton truck gross: 10" - 3'a-ton truck gross; 12" - 8-ton truck gross; 15" - 10-ton truck gross: 20" - 25-ton truck gross; 25" - 45-ton truck gross; 30" - 70-ton truck gross; 36" - 110-ton truck gross; If the ice is soft aud slushy; double the required thickness. Ice under a deep blanket of: snow is a poor foundation if the snow fell prior to a period of low temperatures. snow acts as insulation and keeps out the freezing cold necessary to form a deep ice cover. As you make your way over this surface, punch holes, not only through the snow, but right into the ice to see if it is thick enough for your safety. Check with the local residents for the danger spots. Take their advice. If in doubt, stay off the ice. The Broomball league playoffs start this Sunday UTICA AUTO BODY 3 SMITS CYCLE & SPORTS 0 Being the last game in the league play a win or a loss would make no difference in the standings as Smits has first place clinched and Utica second. There were no goals in the first period but Utica started it off at 6:20 of the second on a goal by Brian Reader from Frank Fielding and Mike Mitchell. Then again at 12:55 by Frank Fielding from Ron Redman. The final goal was scored by Frank Fielding from Ron Redman and Mike Mitchell. Dennis Symes picked up the shut out for Utica. BRIAN'S SUPERTEST 3 DUFF"S TOWING 2 For Brian's the win by one goal might as well have been a loss because they had to win by a four goal margin to: make the playoffs ahead of' Duffs. They played a good game to end the season. Brian's went out in front at 12:15 of the first period when Ken Fraizier popped it in from Ken Nott and John Cooper. But Duff's came back with two quick goals in the early minutes of the second period. One at 1:05 by Ken Vipond from Bill Ruhle, then the other at 3:35 by Wayne Church from Ken Down. Brian's came from behind with a goal by John Cooper from Paul Christie at 5:40, then the winner at 14:00 by Ken Fraizier from John Cooper. COULTER'S 1 CAWKER'S BUTCHER'S 0 Even though it was a little late to start things going Coulters picked up their first win of the season in the last game of the season. Cawkers were very sloppy throughout the game and Coulter's only accident by 50%! In 1973, 2000 people were killed and nearly 100,000 injured in car accidents here in Ontario! Tragic? Sure. But even more tragic when you consider that many of these people could have been saved by one simple action. Buckling a seat belt. Scientific evidence proves that seat belts reduce the chance of death or injury in a car Seat belts mean greater safety. This is what Ontario is doing to make sure people know it ~ and wear them! So your Ontario Government is spon- soring an intensive educational program to persuade drivers and passengers--and children, too--to wear a seat belt even on short drives. The symbol of this program is the sign shown. It's a reminder to "Buckle up for You'll be seeing it often along Ontario streets and highways. It's part of a plan to help protect you, your family, and everyone in the province--to help Ontario residents live better, longer. And to make doubly-sure of it, the govern- ment has prepared interesting, informative . booklets, a film, and a special school pro- ~ gram on the importance of wearing a seat belt.
