The damned-the-cost-I'll-fix-it-myselfers. If things keep going as they are; you're bound to see more of them, carrying a well-worn Library electrical repair booklet, screwdriver, hammer, and lots of life insurance. Where will we see them? Down at the corner store, buying fuses by the carloads, .or littering the halls at the local hospital. And it's no wonder. At $2.50 cents every 10 "minutes, it's simply worth risking a few hundred volts. : | got my first shock when | called about getting our dryer fixed the other day. It was $14 bucks to come to the house, another few dollars to remove the repairman's wrenches, and the $2.50 per ten minute repair fee. If he needed a part, he'd have to order it, which took an ordering fee, the cost of the part, plus installation fee. The installation fee includes $14 to come to the house..... : So, | decided to do it myself. Kicking it didn't help. It works with the TV: set, the stereo, and sometimes the.pool room soft drink machine, but not our dryer. So after about an hour of booting the thing from all angles, | crawled through the round hole, removed the young fellow's half-dry winter coat with the brick in the pocket and readied for some serious examination. There, were green wires, red wires, black and white wires. | - systematically began crossing each one with the other, but after exhausting our supply of spare fuses, had to give up. | knew | was getting close, though, as there were lots of sparks flying in all directions. | tried spinning the drum by hand, shaking it, and cussing at it. No luck. It just sat there. | even tried to replace it part by part, but | found that components escalate in price back- wards to a point where a switch costs more than a new appliance. So why don't more appliance people drive caddies? ) i Fact is, they're as bad off as we are. Planned obsolescence usually bypasses the serviceman. Right from the store, to the customer, to the junk yard. And if you consider the house call too expensive, consider the little old lady who forgets to plug in her TV. A serviceman could conceivably spend all day dodging around town, plugging in television sets and adjusting bunny ears.....all for a thank you. B As far as our dryer was concerned, we've solved our problem for only a few bucks...the cost of some clothespins and clothesline. ....Now to the toaster..... - Emiel's Place Licensed Dining and Banquet Rooms -- TRY OUR -- CON.
