More money needed Day Care Centre few years away It's doubtful whether Port Perry will get a new day care centre within "The next few years, thinks regional coun- cillor and Scugog Mayor Lawrence Malcolm. He was commenting on a letter, from the province informing the region that a total capital fund subsidy wasn't approved for the project. He said that unless the province finds some more _money to finance the project under the special 100 per cent Project Day Care Services, subsidy, he can't see the project getting underway in the next two years under the normal 50 per cent subsidy for such ptojects, due to tight money. The Port Perry centre is the second in priority of five regional centres planned. The Ministry of Commun- ity and Social Services' reasons for the grant turn- down was due to the large responsé from other munici- palities and organizations. John Hayes, spokesman for the ministry, told the regional social services committee that for, this. reason the proposal for a centre in Port Perry could not be considered. Mr. Malcolm "gues- timated" a possible cost of such a facility of more than $200,000. According to regional day care services spokesman, the operation costs of an average-size | centre are about $100,000 to $110,000 - an annual cost shared 80 per cent by the province and 20 per cent by the local community. ~ F.
