A population of 9 million in 6 provinces. . Havana, the capital with a 'population of over 2 million people. The first impression of Havana is the hustle and bustle, all kinds of traffic, cars, trucks and buses. The people are busy and cheerful. Most of the cars are 1951, '52, '53 Fords, Chevs and Ply- mouths from Europe. Trucks and Buses from Russia. Heavy building equipment also from Russia, England, and as far away as Japan. The skyline of Havana is dotted with new high-rise buildings and many more in construction. Elsewhere in the older part of the city, old buildings are being restored. Havana once; one of the beautiful cities of the Amer- icas in the thirties, is about to resume that stature. The harbour is packed with freighters from all over the world. In order to achieve a trade balance, there is rationing on food, clothing, cigarettes and luxury items. Havana like most large cities still has slums. How- ever, great strides are being made. About eight miles from the city, a large com- plex of high-rise apartments is being created, some are already- occupied. When completed in 1976, there will be 18,000 apartments. Cost to workers, 6 to 8 per cent of annual salary. These apart- ments are located on a lovely stretch of coast and will be self contained as to shopping, services and recreational activities. Although a Communist state, Cuba is a nonaligned country, the relations with Russia and China are of a trade nature rather than a political one. Russia is not too happy with this. Cuba now has some 160 colleges and universities. Parts of Cuba are quite mountainous with beautiful fertile valleys. Large citrus groves, old ones and a great many new ones. Large herds of Cattle, many Aberdeen-- Angus and Holsteins imported from Canada. The farm houses and barns are thatched roofs. Cuba is short of lumber, so concrete is used for fence posts and hydro poles. Sugar cane is one of the principle agricultural products. The City of Matanzas is in such an area and has one of the largest sugar refineries in Cuba. This city of 90,000 also has a large sulphur mine and processing plant. Nearing completion is a large distillery. The largest in the world so the Cubans claim. Matamzas Bay was one of the first landing places of the Spanish, ., and means massacre in Spanish. The Varadero area is very beautiful with excellent accomodation at Villas du Cuba, a new hotel. The weather, just about perfect with a nice breeze, Tourism is being=-=sshistorical most of the time. Canadian money readily changed at the better stores and hotels, Havana has much to offer, the tourist, with its beautiful, buildings and parks. Also, one of the most spectacular night clubs, out- side of Las Vegas, The Tro- picana, is outside in beautiful surroundings and holds over 1,000 people. The show lasts for over two hours, and resembles a Hollywood super spectacle. Allin all, a visitor to Cuba will find much to enjoy. It's quite a different holiday. Canadians are very popular and with the new trade pact, we signed with Cuba, we will be hearing much more of this delightful country.
