AK pam We planted our first outdoor garden last week, so let me tell you that after years of digging through supermarket vegetable counters, eating thawed peas and mushy berries, the summer sun, warm temperatures and fresh air has given me a new outlook on the advantages of rural life and the back to nature movement. Never again. Why anyone in his right mind would want to pass up an air conditioned grocery store to go burrowing his way through a back yard patch of greens is beyond me. Even those 20th century gadgets don't seem to help much. | borrowed one of those noisy, smokey tillers from a friend, thinking to eliminate all of that shovel work. But when | started the thing, it raced from one end of the garden to the other, draggin a startled would-be gardener behind. ) A couple of dandelions were bent over a bit, but other than that, the tilled part looked no different from the untilled. But it was no problem. It was fun, and not very hard at all. | could have done three gardens. The neighbour's young fellow .fixed that, though. After he fiddled with a metal bar at the base of the handles, the rig became a regular little gopher, churning up dirt in criss-cross patters all over the place. So much for the tiller. Next step was to crush all those hard chunks of dirt. There we were, four of us, banging shovels, rakes furiously. So enthusiastic was the lump-crushing effort, that my three-year-old daughter got carried away and flattened three cucumber hills planted earlier. . . The actual planting was easy, once we established a system. | went alon the rows with a hammer, thumping holes in the ground at foot intervals. The young fellow -drawled along behind, dropping a couple of seeds into each of the hammer holes. My wife followed, filling the holes in and the little girl followed behind, digging them up to see: if they're growing. 'So now starts the waiting game. The fight with the weeds, birds, and backyard baseballers. Already we've vetoed a project that would have made the tomatoes home plate. In the end, we hope to get a few baskets of goodies. Tomatoes, beans, etc., etc. That's to justify a new $300 freezer. ~~ Queen St. Elsewhere $10.00 per year. He said a septic system for the arena has also not been considered. "It's all pos- sible," he said. Mr. Hall said the consult- ant firm is at this time get- ting information from the region about servicing the arena. There are, as well, accord- ing to Mr. Hall, certain things in the drawings and specifi- cations submitted, certain things that he disagreed with completely. "Like a $35,000 isprinkler system," he said. "Ina build- ing that's largely of concrete and steel, 1 just cannot see a Men's SHORTS Plaid 5.95 NAN IS 3 0 5 S05 S00 Sr SSH 569 need for it." Mr. Hall said there may have been some misunder- standing at the outset of the project between the commit- tee and the consultants, in that the cost of the arena was for the complete project, with servicing. He"said that it has been made clear now, that the $750,000. is the total price. "They must work backwards from there. Subtract the cost' of servicing, and what's left is what you build the arena with." Mr. Hall expressed con- cern, however, about the use- fullness of "ballpark figures' that have been released in the past month. "They serve only to excite people," he said. No matter what the price, however, the overall com- munity campaign to raise the $200,000 committment has al- ready been plotted for the next six months. Mr. Hall said that a major event a month has been plan- ned, as well as, the continual fund-raising efforts. The Port Perry Kinsmen Club Springfest this month will mean a donation to the fund, and so will at least part of the proceeds from a recreational products show planned for June 6 and 7.
