Cornish Public School hosted a Durham Element- ary Teachers' Association Track and Field Meet at Port Perry High School, June 9th. A qualifying meet in prep- aration for the weekend finals held in Oshawa, the meet saw some 500 students from 15 Central Ontario Region" schools take part. The meet was one of six qualifying meets held in preparation for the finals June 14. Area athletes did well in the competition in events ranging from hurdles to shot- put. . Placing firsts at the Cent- ral meet were: GIRLS - Hurdles - Donna Foote and Lee Anne Howsam, R.H. Cornish. 100 metres - Anita Preston, Marylou Bourgeois, R.H. Cornish. 200 metres - Mary Baxter, Carrie Warne, R.H. Cornish. 100 metres - Leanne Van- Camp, Cartwright; Mary Baxter, Lee Anne Howsam, R.H. Cornish. 800 metres - Terri Healey, Tracey Denby, R.H. Cornish. Long Jump - Debbie Clev- erdon, Greenbank; Vivian Wilcox, R.H. Cornish. Standing Long Jump - Barb Markovic, Prince Al- bert; Mary McKelvey, Paula Price, R.H. Cornish. Cornish P.S. jump. Midgets defeat Oshawa On Tuesday, June 10th, the Port Perry Merchant Mid- gets travelled to Oshawa and handed them their first loss of the season. The game ended in a 4 - 2 victory ina close, hard fought battle for first place. All the scoring occured in the last two innings as Larry Elson for Port and Glen Moreland for Oshawa had pitched seven innings of scoreless ball. In the 8th inning, Jay Williams led off with a single and Larry Elson followed up with a towering homerun to deep right field. Before they could recover their compos- ure, Phil Cochrane singled, stole second and raced home on the ensuing overthrow. In the 9th, Colin Wackett sing- led, stole second, was sacri- ficed to third and came home on a passed ball. On Oshawa's last bat, they had two men on and two out ~~ Win top league position when Roger Barrett stroked a base hit scoring two runs. In trying to stretch his single toa double, he was tagged out at second base ending the game.
