200, 000 expected at World Plow Match This fall, Durham Region will play host to 150,000 to 200,000 people when Canada's largest outdoor spectacular ¢ show opens its gates. One of ®he key men behind this international event is Ivan Bell, a resident of Uxbridge. Ivan Bell came to Ontario County at the beginning of 1971, and even then he knew that he would be involved in the International and World Plowing Competitions, four and a half years later. There's lots more to a plowing match than just plowing, and part of that is because of the organization that goes into making the match. There's fun, enjoy- ment, education and a new world of products and dis- plays for those unfamiliar to the farm machinery and ser- vices of today's agriculture. As Agricultural Represent- ative, Ivan Bell works for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Ontario, but is finding that much of his time is devoted to his additional responsibilities as secretary of the Local Executive Com- mittee for the International Plowing Match. He has also found that he has become involved as the secretary of the Local World Contest Committee for the arrange- ments dealing with the World Contest. For the thirdtime in the history of the World Contest it is being held in Canada, and it will be held during the course of the six day International Plowing Match in Durham Region. . Ivan Bell is a resident of Durham Region. He moved to Uxbridge when he came from Prince Edward County where he was Agricultural Representative from 1960 to 1970. This year the Inter- national Plowing Match will WES LANE PLUMBING - HEATING. - - ELECTRIC - PORT PERRY 985-2413 OFFICE -- RESIDENCE be held within the city bound- aries of the city of Oshawa and the town of Whitby. "This is the first time ever that the Match has'béen held within a city," says Ivan Bell. "Almost a thousand acres of land is required and 100 acres is put aside for use as the tented city." Because of the extent of the exhibits and the size of the tented city, thereis alot more to see and do at a plowing match than watch the plow- ing. "This will be exhibits from the old steam era, rural crafts, parades and over 300 exhibits of farm machinery and service organizations to Canada's rural population. Garden tractors will be on display, farm tractors and gigantic combines that would set the purchaser back half the price of a new house." During the course of this year you won't be seeing much of Ivan Bell at the local Uxbridge curling rink, nor will you see him often at the Uxbridge Pool where he and the family like to go. The organization of the Inter- national and World Plowing competitions is going to keep Ontario County's Ag Rep busy, and those in the office . constantly on the go or on the phone. There are about 22 organizing committees at the local level and there will be upwards of 23 countries com- peting in the World Contest this year. Ivan Bell will be the pivot man in this year's organiz- ation. He invites enquiries, and says that if he can't answer any question on the match, regional exhibits or Church group involvement, then he most likely knows 62525252525 ENTERTAINMENT TROPHIES Auditorium .. 28 PAVILIONS free. x OSHAWA'S » Week Of Fun JUNE 22 to 28 Fiesta '75 will entertain and aquaint you with the food, dress, dance, music, arts and crafts of the many ethnic groups in your area. If you like parades, then it's the place for you; if you like the smell and hiss of steam with a little soot in the eye, then the dates are September 23 to Septem- ber 27. If good country food is what you like, then there is nothing like some of the home-made pies and cakes offered by the Church groups who have lunch stands throughout the 100 acres of the tented city area. There's even some Conklin rides for the children, and a display of new. cars for Dad as the new model cars for 1976 will be on display for the first time at the plowing match (car model introduction dates coincide with the plowing match dates.) "It's going to be a great show this year," says Ivan Bell, "and if all goes accord- ing to plan there will be 200,000 people at this year's show." That's the extent of the interest in this annual event to be held this year in the Region of Durham at Oshawa. Stricter attitude towards use of rights-of- ways An increasing number of complaints from residents of properties bordering on Ontario Hydro rights-of-way about noise and dust caused by motor bikes has prompted a stricter attitude toward the use of the rights-of-way by unauthorized individuals. Hydro encourages the use of its rights-of-way for leisurely activities but pro- hibits motorized vehicles because of the resulting noise and dust pollution to nearby residential areas. Inthe past, Hydro has been reluctant to charge operators of motorized vehicles except in extreme circumstances, but consideration for the comfort of neighbouring residents dictates increased patrolling, more widespread posting of signs and prosecut- ion of persistent offenders.
