sted wid ma daiih sath { / / EE aE ENE News from Greenbank If a hostess is at a loss to revivify conversation at a dull party let her mention hospitals. All present will have a story, either personal or about a friend or relative. Some will be horror stories (too many perhaps) and some will be appreciative (again, too few perhaps) but almost all will agree on one thing, for attention and com- fort the community and cot- tage hospitals win hands down. Good sense tells us that only the big hospitals have the facilities and exper- tise for major and complicat- ed medicine and surgery, yet more and more they are being accused of less than compassionate concern for a patients comfort and state of mind. One of the answers is simple and obvious. In a small hospital a patient gets to know and have confidence in a staff too small to remain alien, in a large hospital the non-medical staff rotate so frequently and are so taken up with non-bedside duties that a patient seldom sees the same nurse twice and can even lose a sense of identity. This last is an ad- ministrative failing and interesting news from Eng- land illustrates an attempt to correct it. One hospital is experimenting with assign- ing a group of nurses to a particular group of patients, so that even with part time nurses the patient at least becomes accustomed to the same people. It doesn't sound like a major policy change, does it? But it would help. At 8:15 on June 21st there will be a presentation at the Community Hall to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wagner and family.
