Teams from Toronto, Oshawa, Peterborough, Bradford, E. Gwillimbury, Aurora and Keswick provided the com- petition. Inthe first game of the day, Port defeated Oshawa 4-1ina hotly contested battle. Larry Bombers win, BLUE BOMBERS 3 UXBRIDGE TIGERS 1 This was Port's first home game and the boys came out determined to win. Port scored the first goal after 5 minutes of play. John Kuipers got his second goal at the 5minute mark. Uxbridge came back with a goal by Brent Beard in the second half, but Michael Gundry put the game out of reach with the 3rd goal of the game. Next game in Uxbridge, Thursday, June 26th at 7:30 p.m. Elson pitched a strong two- hitter to carry the team to victory. Phil Cochrane had 3 hits, Lary Elson and Colin Wackett had two, with singles going to Robert Evans and Ken Bryant. This put us into "*A" Bracket and Oshawa into the Easier "'B" bracket. In Game two, the Mer- chants paced a good team from Peterborough, but Chargers lose Last Thursday, the Scala Brother Chargers had a let- down near the end of the game, and lost 3 - 2 to the Green Hornets of Uxbridge. The Chargers had most of the play and at one time were winning 2 - 1, but two quick goals by the Green Hornets gave them the victory. Again Larry elson started on the mound. He pitched for 3 innings and was relieved by Phil Cochrane. They com- bined on a seven-hitter and kept Peterborough in shock throughout. In the "A" Championship game, the Merchants took on Bradford and trounced them 10-3, Phil Cochrane pitched an excellent 6 innings, allow- ing only two hits before giving way to Rick Goris in relief. The boys chalked up 15 hits- with Phil Cochrane and Milk Healey getting 3 each, Colin Wackett, Jay Williams, and Mike McQuade getting two, and Rick Goris, Sean Taylor and Dan McKee get- ting one hit each. In the GRAND Champion- ship game, pitting the "A" against the "B' winners, Port came up flat and were beaten by Oshawa 4-1. Both pitchers, Larry Elson for Port and Jeff Boyce from Oshawa pitched strong Games. Port's troubles stemmed from errors as the boys were quite jittery com- mitting four errors in the 2nd and 3rd innings, allowing three runs. Summing it up, the boys played exciting ball. and came away with the "a" trophy and everyone had a good time. Lumbermen reach semi-finals in tourney Ballard Lumbermen made an excellent showing in the fourth annual tournament this past weekend. The local club advanced to the semi-finals in the consel- ation round of the thirty-two team tournament, before be- ing eliminated by last years Intermediate "B" Ontario Champion Bradford team. In league action last week the Lumbermen dropped a close 6-5 decision to the Oshawa Juniors. Hugh Johnston has recov- ered from his recent hard injury and made two pinch- hit appearances in the Mark- ham tournament. Hughs re- turn should add some much needed hitting to the lineup. Starr Furniture will be the opposition this Thursday evening when the local club again take to the diamond, game time is 8 o'clock. Last weeks game with Fal- con TV had to be postponed due to-a wet field. After the heavy showers on Thursday. It is hoped that this game can be rescheduled at a later date. LUMBERMEN 1 BINBROOK 0 In one of the best played game of the tournament the Lumbermen defeated a strong Binbrook club 1-0. (continued on page 19) winning PORT PERRY 10 KESWICK 7 ..On Tuesday, June 17th, 4th place Keswick came to town and were defeated 10-7. Larry Elson pitched 6 innings allowing one run. In the 7th, Rick Goris took over and both teams opened up and scored four runs each. Port's hitting was done by Rob Evans, Ken Bryant, and Rick Goris with two apiece; with single hits going to John Scott, Colin Wackett, Mike McQuade, Larry Elson, Dan McKee and Dan McClure. The highlight of the game, was Rick Goris' triple with the bases loaded in the 7th. PORT PERRY 4 CLAREMONT 2 The Merchants travelled to Claremont on Thursday, June 19th and handed them their fourth loss in a row. Phil Cochrane led the yyay on Midgets continue streak the mound, throwing a three- hitter. The only runs he gave up were on a throwing error which scored both of their runs. Our boys pounded out 8 hits with doubletons going to Dan McClure and Evans. The other hits were contributed by Sean: Taylor, Charlie Durward, Larry Elson and John Scott.
