According to Trent-Severn officials, lower water levels allow more sunlight to get-at the underwater plants, resulting in extremely rapid growth. Although similar problems are being experienced in the rest of the Trent system, the problem is worse in the shallow lake. 2 Sponsored by Scugog Chamber of Commerce 'SY CACC TTrEETTT CCCI: Thurs., Aug. 7th 6 p.m. - 1 a.m. St. Charles Saloon 7.30 p.m. - 10 Bingo - Adults & Children's 8 p.m. - 12 Dancé - ""Bloodstone' - $2.00 per person High School Fri, Aug. 8th Midway 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Merchants Street Market 10 a.m. Kiddies Parade - 'Kinettes' 2 p.m. - St. Charles Saloon 2 p.m. Scavengers Hunt (4.7 - 8-14) Queen St. 8pm. -1N Street Square Dance - Frank Barkey Water St. 8 p.m. - 12 Dance - Jaysell Harvest - $2.00 per person Latchem Centre 9%h.m. - 1 a.m. 'Memory Music' - Peters Platters . $2.00 per person Sat, Aug. 9th 9 a.m. 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. 2 pm. - 2 p.m. 3 p.m. 4.30 - 7 p.m. .... Fair Grounds Ball Park Ball Park Ball Park Palmer Park Fair Grounds A o H i It may look like a land reclamation project on the south end of Lake Seugog, but it isn't. : Lake Scugog is over aninch lower than the minimum limit, and officials of the Trent Severn system told the STAR last week that if the hot, dry spell continues, it could get much worse. - Lake Scugog is especially vulnerable to such dry spells, Leonard Begg of the Water- way system points out, "because there are no back-up reservoir lakes to help main- tain Scugog water levels as there arein other areas of the system. But weeds are as much a prablem in the rest of the system as they are becoming in Lake Scugog. In Lake Scugog, parti- cularly on the south side of the causeway, more and more weeds are becoming visible. As the water level drops, more sunlight and heat gets to the plants. "They thrive on this kind of weather, said the system's assistant supervisor of oper- ations. It is becoming a big problem all through the system. Mr. Begg said the dam has been closed off, and leaks plugged. But heavy evapor- ation all over the system has resulted in low flows. He said in Peterborough, where the system is backed up by a reservoir, the CFS (foot per second water flow past a given point) is about 400. That's well below the normal 800 to 1,000 CFS. He said that estimates for ore week showed evapor- ation to be about 1,200 CFS, more than the flow. Mr. Begg said waterway people are "very concerned' about the situation, and are keeping track of Lake condit- ions. Readings at Caesarea are taken daily. Warnings for boaters to stay within navigation channels already gone out. At this time, however, there is little that can be done, according to the official. Feeders of hogs, chicken broilers and turkeys derive the greatest feeding advantages from pelleted rations. With broilers and turkeysfthe purpose is to enable the birds to eat more. With hogs there are big advantages . . . improved feeding efficiency (about 10%), and improved rates of gain (7-8%). The explanation is that the pelleted rations provide increased digestible energy, increased availability of other nutrients, and reduced feed wastage through the virtual elimination of fines and dust. For other classes of livestock, notably laying hens and cattle, the advantages are largely in handling. Bin flow is made easier and segrega- tion of ingredients is reduced. Maybe it's time you switched to SHUR:GAIN PELLETED RATIONS? Let's discuss it. Wallace Marlow Co. Ltd. Blackstock, Ontario 986-4201 TER ye AEE ps EN -n = TN ET pt yy
