David Porter benefi ts Grants for local skater Health and Welfare, Min- ister Marc Lalonde today made public the names of 88 Ontario athletes -- one from Port Perry -- eligible to receive: federal government grants-in-aid _for student- athletes for the 1975-76 aca- demic year. Figure skater David Porter of Port Perry is among the 242 Canadian ath- letes who are active in Olym- pic sports and are eligible. Under a new and expanded program of. financial assis- tance to Canadian student- athletes' announced recently by Mr. Lalonde, all Game Plan "Carded" athletes are eligible. for. these grants-in- aid, on application. The 242 eligible athletes announced today include many of: Canada's outstanding ath- letes from 20 Olympic sports. Values of the individual awards arebased on the level of academic program under- taken by the student athlete, SS i i XY SN ify JAX & either on a full or part-time basis. University ' students are eligible to receive $1,800; those in.community colleges. or CEGEP $1,200; and high- school students $600. The awards to those authorized to attend non-Canadian insti- tutions under this program are subject to adjustment dependent upon the degree of financial aid provided by these non-Canadian institut- ions. -» In addition to this assis- tance, $600 is automatically provided to "all carded student-athletes who are - living away from home or are married. Also, an allowance for individual training needs - will -be provided upon approval by the national sports governing bodies and Game Plan. - In 'making this announce- ment, Mr. Lalonde noted that one of the primary purposes of the grants-in-aid program, initiated five years ago, was to encourage Canadian ath- letes to attend Canadian uni- versities and also to assist them in combining both their __ educational and competitive | sports careers.
