Diseased muskellunge caught for research Early Saturday morning a truck backed up to the boat launching site at the foot of Queen Street. Two men jumped out and proceeded to launch an aluminum boat. Normally this type of activ- ity at the lakefront would not warrant a second glance but on this occassion it did, because instead of water, there was ice to greet them at the site. The men are students of Dr. Don Sonstegard of the Department of Microbiology of the University of Guelph. and were here to retrieve nets set the night before near the 7A causeway. After chopping through half inch ice for about 100 feet, the student motored to the site were the nets had been set and proceeded -to pull them in. .....They were on. an. _assign- ment to catch and bring back to the university musk- 59 aS \ ellunge with a disease called 'red sores'. For the past three or four years Dr. Sonstegard and his students have been re- moving - diseased muskies from the waters of Lake Scugog to try and find the' cause of this 'virus'. The department is trying to find a way to control the disease which eventually kills fish which develop it. According to one of the students about one in ten muskies they catch have the virus, but no cause has yet been found. On this trip to Lake Scugog they took six specimens back to the university for testing purposes this winter. INSURED?
