Local officials point to a lack of support and enthusiasm of parents as the major reason for the drop-off in interest among boys. The corps has brought several awards to the community, including an all-Ontario marksmanship trophy. He said that on a number of occasions on parades, annual inspections or awards night, few parents showed up. He recalled one open house, designed to let parents know what his son or daughter was doing in the club, only two parents showed up. "If that's the kind of interest parents take, then you can't blamg the boys for taking the same kind of attitude," said the Navy Leaguer. 'You just can't help being disappoint- ed at all." The group was about a third understrength (about 20 boys) when the Department of Defense made addition support temporary: The organization struggled up to 25, then dropped again to 20, where it. had stayed for a few months. Lately, however, member- ship had dropped drastical- ly. The group has about 10 or 12 members now, far too few for DND support and a disappointing blow for the Navy League. So last week, it folded. Many were long- time members, and had shown a good interest in the sea cadet program. Like most similar youth organizations, the emphasis is on citizenship and things like physical fitness, fun, and activity, rather than heavy military emphasis. Also like other organiz- ations of this sort, the oppor- tunities for members were unlimited. Not only are boys eligible for summer camps either in British Columbia or the east coast for periods ranging from two weeks to 16 weeks, but exchange programs have seen boys from this area go' to Sweden, Great Britain and other European countries...free of charge.
