Cornish By Darla Thomas SPORTS This winter has been a very busy season for the girls. - The Junior Girls Volleyball team were very successful in playing exhibi- tion games against Lincoln Avenue, Athabaska and Beau Valley Schools. On February 4th, they partici- pated in a tournament where they defeated schools from the Central Ontario District including Good- wood, Scott Central, Sunder- land, Thorah, and Uxbridge. This tournament qualified them for the D.E.T.A. finals. On Saturday, March 6 at Whitby Senior P.S., they were declared the second best team in all of Durham Region defeating Dr. Phillip E. A. The boys played well in both games. They hit hard, passed well, to make the scoring look easy. In the first game, scoring for the Canadian Tire Ban- tam team were Ron Ash- more with 3, Brian Myers, Gerald Lee, Tim Thompson, Broomball (continued three games. Smits played a good defensive game holding down Brooklin who usually are a high scoring team, down to one goal. At thc end At the end of the first period Smits were ahead 2-1. Then in the second the score remained the same as it was, Smits scored the clinching goal late in the third. Smits scored at 8:05 of the first when Don Gray scored from Pat Thompson and John Gerber.
