Berrill SOME QUIET, PLEASE It's believed that the human being has a deep need of quietude. A time for communion with self and reinforcement of its weaknesses many will willingly submit to even a few hours of being quietly alone? There's always the television, the radio and the telephona: We've become accustomed to too many diversions. Also, the art of quiet conversa- tion has become almost non-existent. 'We turn on a T.V. and permeate our life with commercial ads. and chit chat that boggles the brain. But if of necessity, this home was filled with people over-running our thoughts, we'd go dashing for cover, screaming 'Stop the world, I wanna' get off." . And we ride in a car with the radio blaring; we shop, we work we eat to a radio. It's the built-in background # of life. While a party is --- music so loud we yearn for # ear-plugs: and we thought quite recently when # attending a strange church that here too, the loudness overtook and destroyed the melody. # There's much-to-do these days about the search for ™ identity, But where else than in this maze of noise and bustle could ones' self possibly have gotten lost??? Remembering bits of our childhood we can always hear our father's voice shouting, "Boys!" Females were greatly outnumbered in that honge and although they'd be providing their quota of noise and com- motion this was inclusive, and that word was sufficient to-calm a roomful of/kids. Though some- : times in a monotone 'he'd add/*'l can't hear myself i : think." But there's other reasons now, needful reasons for quiet. Hence, anti-noise laws. Noise is detrimental to health. Having spent many years of our life in almost total deafness we know the word and all its implications -- this is not the quietness we'd recommend. While it's been said that "Silence is the safety zone of conversa- tion" if carried too far it can also brand a person as stupid, ignorant or antisocial. And this coin has another side. Often, a deaf personsbelieving he's following a conversation and tries to add his 'two-bits' is thrown into a turmoil of confusion to find that his answer wasn't remotely related to the topic. This can be funny to the audience but mortifying to the victim. A lady, also deaf, once confided that her insurance against such blunders was *'Just keep on talking." So it's well to peware. If you meet a woman who won't shut-up she may be deaf. Seriously. it's been proven that with no other handicap do we try so hard to *'Say it isn't so.' Although this matter of deafness is as old as time it has received but little of publicity and concern and within this enlightened age are those, non-deaf, who shrug off the word as of equal importance with hangnails or a blistered heel. But at last some bright doctors have brightened-up to a point of confessing it to be on a par with other maladies and with as dire effects. Only--its number is greater than all of six dreaded diseases combined, including cancer. So we plead for quiet; because Medical Science has discovered noise to be, if not wholly responsible, the Time for y= syrup The cold winter nights and warm spring days we are the ideal conditions for the maple sap run. Now is the time to get the family or a group of friends organized and head for the nearest maple syrup festival. Food specialists at the Ontario Food Council, Ministry of Agriculture and Food sug- gest, if you are fortunate enough to get to a festival or some other maple syrup event, that you be sure to purchase a good supply of syrup. Many people pur-- chase a year's supply while they have the opportunity. To retain the fresh flavor and top quality of maple syrup for an extended perjod of time at home, store it in your freezer.
