Abel and Blanchard at the University of Tennessee have been funded $ HALF MILLION by the U.S. Dept. of Mental Health to fully investigate the causes of rape. The increase in rape has become a major social problem in the U.S. By screening potential rapists and treating them, the doctors claim many innocent women can be saved its ravages. The conclusion: rape is'not entirely a sexual act but one of aggressive violent behaviour 50 percent caused by people with anti-social behaviour, not excessive sexual desire. uel iss . On the basis of their findings it appears to confirm my theory that aggression is often - triggered by deficiencies in vital minerals such as 'magnesium, calcium (natures natural tranquilizers) etc. and the B complex group which often control the way we feel. 1 have dealt with the subject in a more complete manner in a full column relating vandali$m and aggressive behavior in part to malnutrition. Sugar has been linked by some researchers to uncontrollable aggressive anti-social behavior. Adding alcohol furth- er aggravates the situation. The work of Dr. Feingold, of San Francisco, has really shown that children suffer from hyperactivity in relation to their consumption of junk foods. Take the junk foods out of their diet. One chocolate bar, one coke, and they react immediately. The Washington Post of September 11, 1975, reports that a twelve week study of hyperactive children positively confirms the findings of Dr. Benjamin Feingold (Chief Allergist Emeritus of Kaiser Hospital San Francisco) that up to 50 percent of child hyperactivity can be traced to chemical additives in our food. Nutrition Canada, a survey of the dietary habits of approximately thirty thousand Canadians, compiled by the Department of Health and Welfare has shown that the five outstanding dietary deficiencies of these young Canadians were Vitamin-A, D; Calcium, iron and folic acid. This survey also revealed that the. ten nineteen year old female was the most deficient age and sex Sony : SOLAR HEAT It is interesting to note that numerous homes in the States are adding solar heat units to their homes. I am SW : double benefit of teaching a retarded youngster to _$1.13...LCBO gets $3.15 while Ottawa grabs $2.12. The ( told Member of Parliament Bill Scott (Vic-Haliburt- on) has panels in his home in Kinmount. Inexpensive units can be made by looping coils of P.V.C. black water pipe on the roof. More heat can be had by cover- ing them with ordinary window glass (greenhouse style) which traps the heat which is then connected to an indoor- water tank. As water tanks are one of the greatest eaters of hydro and with the continuing cost of hydro going up...a homemade unit could supple- ment the supply. A friend who is experimenting with one says that the black pipe gets so hot that it will circulate the water without'a pump. A circulation pump could be a simple 12v. model that could be powered by a small windmill generator charging a 12 volt car battery. A complete "build it yourself" plan for 5 different water heatérs are in this months (May) Popular Science. The LCBO refusal to sell cheaper $6 whiskies has been labelled a "rip-off" by the former President of the 10,200 member Consumers Association of Canada. The charges levelled at the liquor board were that Ontarians are paying 40 cents more for rye than necessary. Manitoba and Alberta sell the $6 whiskies - while the Ontario Board refuses. The mark-up is more_ that 560 percent! Of the $6.40 a customer pays for the. cheapest bottle of rye in Ontario the distiller gets only take last year for governments was nearly ONE BILLION DOLLARS from the sale of liquor, wine and beer in Ontario. While many people in the know switched to the pure grain alcohol at $5.00 a bottle, the LCBO plugged this recently by raising the price to $5.30 for 25 0zs. Exported Canadian Rye is sold in U.S. for less that $5 a bottle. S Note: Since writing this, the price of liquor has been raised from about 30 to 50 cents 'more per bottle.) Rye is blended with sherry. Dark rum is loaded with Red 2 dye banned by the U.S. and'other countries linked to birth defects and cancer. The natural color of pure rum is white like the pure grain alcohol reducing the affects of hangover. LE EY > Did your hear about the two oral surgeons who were paid a total of $274,256.00 last year by OHIP? 812- Doctors were paid more than $100,000.00 each. Almost half of the 12,037 doctors in Ontario collected $50,000 or more from the plan. ES The Queen has steadfastly refused to bow to demands of the Parti Quebecoise, the Catholic St. Jean Baptiste Society and some Quebec Liberals that she not officiate at the opening of the Olympic games. Her Majesty is Queen of Canada and much less a foreigner than the French architect who was paid millions to design the unfinished stadium. The games are now $1 billion, 300 million in the red. 2 # F \ ignorance and indifference that existed about retarda- "That's not-a-solution;, that's a parental cop-out. Flowers of Hope It is Flowers of Hope Week again atyous Canada, and we in Scugog are asked again to support an organization and cause that for too long was kept 'hidden by society. 4 Many other campigns point to longer life expectah- . cies and the eratication of disease as their justifica. _ tion for existing. So what about the retarded? But think about It a bit, and you can't help but come to the conclusion. that the plight of the retarded has mainly through the efforts of organizations of dedicated and concerned people like our own Central Seven. Take into account, for example, the incredible tion not so long ago. Retardation was something .no one talked. about, understanding. The job, then, was not only to improve the lot of the retarded, but to change the attitudes of an entire society. Mentally handicapped youngsters today are taking part in regular school programs, with the integrate into the community he'll have to live in, as well as teaching the 'normal' student that there's only a handicap's difference between the retarded youngster and anyone else. : Undoubtedly, there are still those today who still look at retardation as something to be hidden, to' sweep under the carpet and to ignore. The fact that these people are in the minority today is the greatest accomplishment of those who have worked so hard over the years to bring us out of the dark ages. In_our opinion, that's a worthwhile campaign. Small-town myth? Small towns, we are told, radiate warmth, friend- liness, and relaxation. Small town" people lead a slower pace of life, enjoy it more, and appreciate and get along with their neighbours. But above all, a small town is a great place to raise . kids and preserve the family unit. So how come the third youth organization in a matter of months is heading for dissolution? How come organization operators have to go to the local Chamber of Commerce for support, rather than the ., parents? The Port Perry High School cadet corps is now on ! probation, and could fold any day due to a lack of "membership. Their situation is almost identical to the way the local sea cadet corps operated until they disbanded a few weeks ago. Scouting has also hit low ebb to the point where there are no troops in Port Perry. ' Whether we choose to face it or not, the trend that these developments reveal is of no small concern. It shows gross indifference, a community's boredom, and a decay of such things as community spirit and co-operation. Of course there will always be those parents who will avoid the issue and attack young people as lazy, uninterested and spoiled. These adults are usually the ones who send their kids off to a hockey game rather than taking them. When the sea cadets folded, organizers talked of annual inspections where two parents showed up. When Port Perry scout and cub organizations called a meeting of 'parents, only a handful of leaders turned out. . If parents arent interested, how can they expect their children to be? Perhaps one reason for this_development here is due to the unique type of immigration to "'bedroom" communities. One gets the impression that the ""Torontonian" dreams of getting it all together with the family by moving to Port Perry, then sitting around, waiting for it all to happen to him. Too bad. It doesn't work that way. Of course, there's also another solution, one that's been suggested to us several times. Why, the solution goes, don't we make the activity, corps or youth group compulsory? When | was a kid, etc. etc. etc. : made some incomparable headway over the years; - least of all openly and with
