"Of Facts and Fantasy By Reta M. Berrill WE CALL IT PROGRESS Our memory includes in shadowy form the first World War. The war that was to end wars and make the world a free and better place. But, in a couple of 3: decades sons of those men were preparing to trace their father's footsteps into yet another war and the world echoed the same song. But whether because of these wars or in spite of i them; whether or not it was a universal thing, change : came. After the final war-cloud had cleared our way i of life changed drastically to acquire a standard of # living to compare favorably with any country of the world. Drudgery was taken out of lahor and our And Although we don't yearn for the good-ole'-days; Z knowing that in many areas there was a great need of reform, we do wonder why the 'good' of those days had to be swept away. Could there not have been a compromise, to make needy conditions better without such ruthless destruction? As with the coming of prosperity, not only did we flout God's laws, we, bit by bit discarded all our cultural traditions that had previously mattered much. We were self-sufficient now and - materialism would become a reigning symbol. Then, was it really necessary to hee replacements from the opposite extreme? Easily it seemed, we adapted to foul language, vulgarity, bad manners and the sanction of books and movies too torrid to touch. All, certainly assured to develop a shock-proof population. This was accepted and copied, shrugged-off as, just a modern trend or passing phase. But it stayed. And one has now only to raise a finger .or a cultured voice in protest of this pollution to be quickly labelled a prude, a meddler or a sinner in disguise. Meanwhile, we're all acutely aware of the startling increase in every kind of crime, (if not, read thoroughly a single copy of a city newspaper) should this be shrugged off too? And the Sabbath is no longer a day-apart, but just one day in our seven-day week. The church too has changed; claiming it had to change to keep pace with the changing people. Although throughout the centuries of time the church had been the steadying influence because of its stability. : Finally, it's argued that God is dead and moral behaviour is a personal thing. If one has no qualms about doing something it's all right to do it. Truly, isn't this a hefty order for one of tender years? And how difficult to endow a child with a decent code of conduct when all around are the shouting voices of the opposition. Yes, morally, we've come a long way downhill, W can't blame any one, yet no one is blameless. Ce some pertinent questions are, Have we by-passed the Last Chance of Redemption? Are we travelling on Deadend Street or hopefully, will we find a Higirpin Turn? Oh surely, our country still has many many people of quiet dedication struggling to hold what remains of goodness and also endeavoring to salvage the broken pieces. But can they succeed, or are they destined to become the Martyrs of Tomorrow? At the risk of being called blasphemous we'd suggest that God is not dead, but rather, He is alive and laughing--seeing us sink ever decper into the mire of our own making. Also, it's cowardly perhaps to feel no remorse in knowing we'll have slipped away before the grand finale. And although we do have grave concern for i our progeny and their future generations--they'll have no memories of a different way, no feelings of guilt. And for the listeners there's long been a discernible whisper from the underbrush that now, steadily strengthening is becoming a voice of be heard. As a reminder or warning it's seemingly saying 'Rome 7 was not built in a day, nor, did it fall in one day, but it 2 did fall." Footnote---These thoughts have been burning a hole in my "sub-conscience' for a long time. If anyone things I'm looking at life with a jaundiced eye, here's a welcome to slap me down.
