8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 30, 1976 Foster Parents give child a fighting chance Chances are that eight- year-old Sang Min Kim of Sang Ju, Republic of Korea, will at least have a fighting chance at getting the basics in food, shelter; health care and education, now that the youngster has become the newest addition to the Walker family of Port Perry. Under the Foster Parents Plan of Canada, +»Mr. and Mrs. Fred Walker of 118 Lilla Street have welcomed into their lives Sang Min, a 3rd grader at a primary school in his Korean home town. Mr. Walker's monthly con- tribution of $17. may not bring Sang Min all the ad- vantages of his other three children, but it brings mat- erial and financial assistance to both child and family aimed at strengthen- ing the family unit by help- ing each member. "It's great for the kids--we get letters from Korea and our kids get to know about others," said Mrs. Walker, mother of Kimberley 7, Fred Jr. 7 and Julie 6. "And I suppose it's a way for us to help out someone who really needs it." Foster Parents Plan pro- vides all the information about the "adoption'" of the needy or destitute child, ranging from how the young- ster is doing in school to information about the rest of his family. Sang Min schooling in- cludes Korean, arithmetic, social studies, natural science, moral studies, arts, music, gymnastics and more. The youngster shares a small living unit consisting of three small rooms with an outside cooking unit with three older sisters and a younger brother. A farmer, his father earns too little to provide the needed basics for all his children. The father of the foster child was born the oldest of five children of a poor farmer in Sang Ju, Kyong- sang Pukdo, in 1936. He quit his middle school because of the financial 'hardships and helped his parent with the farm work. At 23 years of age, he was married in his hometown. After the marri- age, he began to work as a ee ST CHROMACOLOR - qt - w= UXBRIDGE ELECTRONICS 75 Brock Street W. They usually have mixed boiled crops or flour food for their meals while boiled rice is China's staple food. Their side dish is cheap vegetable stuff, and it is difficult for them to eat meat or fish. The family lives in their own living unit, which is inconveniently located. It consists of three small rooms with an outside cooking area, walled with clay and roofed with tile and straw. The rooms are poorly lighted. Electricity is installed in it, and they use a well for their water supply.
