Ballard "Lumbermen" Intermediate Sof:ball Club split two games with the Falcon T.V. Juniors in Osh- awa City and District League play. The local team is still fighting for a play-off spot with an 7-11 record but only trail the fourth place team by four points. Lumbermen5 - Falcon T.V. 3 In Oshawa's Alexander Park on Monday evening, Oshawa's Dave Wilson and the Lumbermen's Bill Mitchell "hooked up" in a pitchers battle for seven inn- ings 'before the local team scored two runs in the ninth inning to nail down the win. Oshawa jumped into an early lead in the second inning when Dave Wilson walked and scored on a hit by Jim Corcoran. "The Port Perry team tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning on a single by Bill Wannamaker and Doug Christie and on an Oshawa error. In the top of the seventh the Lumbermen appeared to have victory in their grasp, when they scored twice but the Juniors fought back and tied the game in their half of the inning. In the top half of the ninth, Brent Heard opened the rally by reaching base. When he was hit by a pitched ball, Bill Wanamaker then lined a single to right field and both runners scored on two throw- ing errors by Oshawa. Ron Redman, Doug Christie and Bill Wannamaker had two hits in this victory. Oshawa scored one win in the first inning, three more in the fifth and wrapped up the game with a run in the seventh inning. Laurie Williams was the losing pitcher with Dave Wil- son getting credit for the win. In spite of what appeared in the Oshawa paper the following day, crediting Wil- son with a no-hit game' the Lumbermen did get singles by Ron Redman, Brent Heard, Doug Christie and Bill Mitchell. The Lumbermen are now inactive until Thursday night at 8:15 p.m. when they play the Markham Aces at the local park. The Ballard Lumbermen will also be in tournament action on the weekend when they will participate in the annual Lindsay Senior Tournament, to be played on Sunday and Monday. Local All-Star team compete in tournament This past weekend a team from the Ontario County Bush League competed in the "B" division for non 0.AS.A. teams and players at Grafton. Players repre- senting the Bell, Grenbank, Port Perry and Greenbank teams in the League put in an excellent showing especially when it is remem- bered that this was the first time the team has played together under game conditions. Jets compete in playdowns Once again the Malmont Farms Jets will compete in the O.A.S.A. play-downs. This year they will be enter- ed in the Int. "D" classi- fication. This means that they will meet only towns of 1500 or less. This year they will play their home games in Nestle- ton which is in the process of having lights installed. The Jets have added to their roster three new players; two pitchers to help carry the load of 0.ASA. play, and a catcher to anchor the team. The 0.A.S.A. play-downs will begin about mid-August and the team is hoping for a good turn out of local fans. Many people feel that the Jets stand a good chance of winning the play-downs and thus bring the first Int. championship to the area. In the first game at 10 a.m. Saturday, the Stone All-Stars defeated Warkworth 1-0. This victory moved the team into competition for the "B" championship. At 5:30 the same day, the Stone-All Stars were defeated 4-3 by Roseneath and eliminated from further competition. A victory here would have placed the team one game away from the final! Standouts in the two out- standing team performances were John Foster of Green- bank at second base and Barry Hurd of Port Perry in right and also left field. Also much appreciation goes out to Ted Dulinski of Bell who organized the entry for the Tournament as well as play- ing at first base for the two games. Port Perry in third place In Sunday afternoon action Port Perry moved back into third place in the Lake Scugog Fastball League as Ken Irvine tossed a 4 hitter. Port Perry pounded out 15 hits in this victory raising their team batting average to .357.
