PORT PERRY Two convincing wins Lumbermen advance to second round playoffs ° for Nestleton Jets by Bob Ryan This week the Malmont Farms Nestleton ballteam entered their 0.A.S.A. play- downs against Pine Orchard. The Nestleton team had no trouble against the weaker Pine Orchard team. In the first game Nestleton batters lead the way to a 10-0 win. Randy MacLeod and Dave Rafuse both pitched well to insure the shut-out. In the second game Mal- mont Farms jumped out to an early lead then fell asleep to allow the Pine Orchard team to score 2 runs in the ninth innings. It was in no way enough as the Malmont Farms demolished Pine Orchard 13-2. Dale Stinson pitched the whole game for the Malmont Farms. This week upcoming may prove to be the toughest for the Malmont Farms as they continue their 0.A.S.A. play- downs against the impres- sive team from Udora. A series of victories would O.AS.A. Randy Dowson "Derby" winner The second annual "Home Run Derby" -was held on "Western Weekend' and the finals run off on Sunday produced a new champion, Randy Dowson of Seagrave. The competition was held at the local park with 25 sluggers on hand to win the honours. Randy qualified with a score of nine with three solid hits to the fence and won the title with another nine point effort. President Jack Cook of Minor Softball made the pre- sentation of the plaque to the 1976 winner. Midgets enter "A" Last Year's O0.A.S.A. Midget "C"' Champions the Port Perry Merchant Midgets are leaving their "C"" classification and will now compete with the larger centres in the 'A' division, it was announced on Mon- day. The Midgets will be play- ing the second game of the first round against Scarboro tonight at 8:30 at the Joe Fowler Memorial Ball Park. Ballard Lumber Inter- mediate Softball tearm have advanced to the second round of the 0.A.S.A. Inter- mediate "'C" play-downs by eliminating Port Perry Canadian Tire in two straight games. Lumbermen 6 - Can. Tire 1 The Lumbermen showed early "jitters" in the opening game of the best of three series, as they committed four first inning errors and Canadian Tire added two infield hits to jump into an early 3-1 lead. Laurie Wil- liams then settled down to record thirteen strike outs and scattered six hits as he didn't allow another run. . The Lumbermen scored a single run in the fifth inning, added two in the seventh and wrapped up the game with three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Gene Hurst led the hitters with three singles in this game while Brent Heard and Doug Chris- Midgets in Summer Games The 1976 Ontario Summer Games will be held in Ottawa: on September 4-5-6. Port Perry Midgets will be there to take part in the softball competition. Seven teams representing six regions and the Ontario Rural softball association will play for the medals. The schedule for Saturday is as follows: 9 a.m. Port Perry vs Picton; 10:30 Wain- fleet vs Owen Sound; 12:00 Thunder Bay vs Grimsby; 1:30 New Liskeard vs Winner Game 1; 3:00 Winner Game 2 vs Winner Game 3; 4:30 Loser Game 1 vs Loser Game 2. The schedule will continue Sunday until 9 p.m. with a single game on Monday at 9 a.m. if needed. A "March-in"' of all ath- letes will be held Saturday evening at one of the stad- jums and all local fans who are in Ottawa will enjoy this colourful event. The Lumbermen left little doubt that they had come to play ball on Sunday evening as they scored 2 runs in the first and two more in the second inning to put the game away early. Jody Williams who had missed last weeks action because of studies made his presence felt as he had two singles and a double, Bill Wannamaker had three hits while Doug Christie had two singles. Doug Scott had two singles for Canadian Tire with Rick Evans and Eric Mortimer had doubles. The Ballard Club will now meet Claremont in the second round of. the 0.A.S.A. which is also the Zone finals.
