University Degree? If you're a GM employee Jiving in or near Oshawa and are interested in getting a university degree, it's no longer necessary t6 drive into Toronto twice a week. Gone is all that time wasted in traffic snarls, detours and winter snowstorms! Now it's possible for GM employees to enrol in univer- sity courses without stopping work or even attending night school. :. The Off-Campus - Programme of the Univer- sity of Toronto will bring entry into university, a certi- ficate or even an arts or commerce degree within reach of many GM employ- ees. In co-operation with the University of Toronto, General Motors is making it possible for employees to study university courses right in GM's Oshawa facilities. Scheduling of the courses has been designed with both shift workers and office workers in mind with the hours of instruction between 4 and 6 p.m. Traditionally scheduled times for such courses have automatically excluded shift workers. Rick Jess, Training In- structor in the Education and Training Department at GM of Canada, says that the company has for some time been putting a great deal of emphasis on university degrees. "Now we're doing some- thing about it my making it convenient for our employ- ees to obtain a university education," he says. All of these courses are under the auspices of GM's Tuition Refund Plan. Through this programme, tuition expenses are refund- ed to the employee, provid- ing he obtains passing grades in the course in which he is enrolled. The* Off-Campus Pro- gramme being offered at GM consists of two types of courses. Oneis a pre-univer- sity course for employees who may not have Ontario Grade 13 or its equivalent. These employees can qualify for university entrance 985-3837 through this special structur- ed course which provides an assessment of their ability. Successful completion of this course enables employees to begin work immediately on certificate and degree courses. - In GM's programme, the pre-university course will probably be English and will run for two hours twice a week, n . The other type of course, the certificate or degree course for those who already qualify for university en- trance, is entitled Organiza- tional Theory. This is a business-oriented ~~ course scheduled for one two-hour session per week. A university certificate is granted on the successful completion of six courses. Should the employee then wish to study for his degree, it is simply a matter of transferring from the certif- cate programme to the degree programme and acquiring nine additional subjects. While this joint effort on the part of the University of Toronto, General Motors and the UAW is starting on a small scale, all have ex- pressed an interest in the expansion of the programme should employee demand require it. Opportunity to hear more about the courses will come on Monday, August 23rd at 4 p.m. when University of Toronto representatives will be in Oshawa and will meet with interested employees in the GM Auditorium on Mary « Street.
