In a ceremonial torch lighting, Lynn Brunton and Jay Baird ran the torch of the Olympics to the pool to start the evenings activities. An Olympic theme was given to the awards night held at Poplar Park last week, complete with the lighting of the Olympic flame. Here Lynn Brunton and Jay Baird run the flame into the pool area to begin the ceremonies. No sooner had the flame been lit, when two firemen, Howard and Linda Smith ran into the pool area trying to extinquish the blaze that was burning atop of the lifeguard stand. But it was to no avail, as both firemen ended up in the pool. In the competition for the "best tan" the audience by way of applause, voted Chris Lane as the boy with the brownest body. Chris won a season's pass to swim in the park next year. Two-year-old Tanya Mappin was the hit of the show as she performed on the diving board for the audience before jumping into nine feet of water. Tanya, who loves the water has been performiong this feat in the Mom's and Tot's class each week. Students in the Bronze class had their turn at amus- ing the audience, racing the length of the pool wearing T-shirts and panty hose, while the Intermediates used the slide to show their skills at basketball. In this event the girls competed against the boys, with the boys winn- ing. The Juniors, Beginners and Tadpoles all showed their skills at either racing or diving to the pool bottom for coins. Instructors Cindy Baird and Pete Lane were very pleased with the participa- tion the children showed dur- ing the evening and complet- ed the events with the awarding of badges. Before Cindy and Pete were able to get away, they were thrown into the pool, and then the pools opened for swimming for all. ; ET me pw = Miss Port Perry Fair, Suzanne Catty, Donna Potts and Chrystal The girls, all shown here in their formal attire, are all residents of Scugog Township and were a credit to making the first pageant a success. Fair this weekend With the Blackstock Fair over, attention this weekend will focus on the Port Perry Labour Day Fair. Unlike other year's, the fair this year will be held over two days, Sunday and Monday, September 5, and 6, making this one of the larg- est fairs in the area. Many new features have been 'added this year, one being the Junior Farmer's' Show. The south east corner of the fairgrounds has been set aside for a large stage where entertainment rang- ing from square dancipg to judo demonstrations will be performed. One of the most noticeable changes in the fair will be the Midway. The Fair Board .has hired a new company to run the rides and games. There will also be a change in location of the Midway. This year it will run north to south along the Rosa Street entrance road. 'These two changes allow the Midway to be bigger and better this year than ever before. The historical Display this year will concentrate on farm engines. There will be steam engines ranging from a large thrashing machine to a small model steam engine that runs a saw mill. Older model tractors will be dis- played to illustrate the pro- gression of farm: machinery through the years. Smaller engines used to grind, pump and cut will also be on hand. Another attraction will be the Mini-miniature tractor pull. Small toy tractors Kia ame] ay he ) . » powered by model aircraft engines compete in this event. These tractors have their own organization with rules and regulations similar to the large tractor pulls. Everything but the excit- ment is on a smaller scale. The competition will begin on Sunday afternoon with the finals on Monday afternoon. Another new idea this year is the childrens Petty Zoo. The Petting Zoo will be located near the Beef Ring where children will be able to walk through and see a variety of small farm animals. There will be a goat, a lamb, piglets and even a white rat. The 1976 Port Perry Fair will be very much a family event, with something of interest for everyone. Two-year-old Tanya Mappin stole the show at Poplar Park last Thursday evening during the 16th annual awards night. Tanya, who loves the water, was to demonstrate jumping off the diving board, but it was only after about 10 minutes and much coaxing that the little water babe decided that it was time to get wet, and jumped in. The little performance she put on was to the delight of those watching. tt ea ar aL Tae pat aoa SSR vs " RETNA ---- TRE TE 53 mn peg SQ RRS: > vs 2 rR a
