On August 25th the beer store in Port Perry was charging U.S. tourists DOUBLE the amount of exchange the Liquor store was charging. While the Liquor store exchange was 2 cents on the dollar bill, the beer store was charging 4 cents. Scugog residents voted into office will either begin: another term, or will be replaced by new represent' atives. To date, only one councillor, Don Frew, has made his intentions clear to the electorate. Don has decided not to run In the upcoming election. What about our other representatives? Will Mayor Lawrence Malcolm give up his office, or will he run for another term?' Will anyone challenge the Mayor if he does decide to run again? . What about councillors Jerry Taylor, Neil Hunter, Reg Rose, Vern Asselstine, and Bob Brinkman? Will they, or will they not run again? We feel that the residents of Scugog township have the right to know NOW. : } . Undoubtedly, there are many other residents in the township who are thinking about running for a seat in the upcoming election. Now is the time to let your fellow ratepayers know your intentions. In only ten short weeks, November 11th, nomin- ations will open for the positions of mayor and councillors and nomination day will be held on Monday, November 15th. Election day is scheduled for Monday, December 6th, 1976. Running the township is a big job, and far from an easy one. No matter what the elected representative does, he will be wrong in the eyes of many, while a great guy in the eyes of others: The job requires a lot of time and dedication, and only those willing to give this, for the good of Scugog Township, should consider running. Let's hear from our present representatives, and any others that might be interested in a position on council. Give us at the STAR a call...and we will relay your message to the voters. Back To School For the child facing school for the first time it can be a great adventure, albeit a little frightening] It's a whole new environment peopled by strangers.. Most children look forward fo that first day with excite- ment. It's a great step. No longer will he or she be just a "kid. They'll be going to SCHOOL! Of course, once they get there it's another question. There are new disciplines to be learned, new people to meet, a whole new and strange society to face. What your child learns during the first few weeks of school will in many ways affect the rest of his life. His world Is expanding and requires a new set of rules to cope with it. Perhaps you've already walked by the school with him several times. That's a good idea! You are sharing this experience. You may even have planned to take him to school the first few days and még! him afterward. But remember, you will not always be able to do that. He'll have to find his own way one of these days. During the next several days think about traffic safety, says the Ontario Safety League. Work out the safest route to the school and accompany your child along that route to make sure he knows it. It's a simple thing to bring up pedestrian safety practices during these walks--obey the traffic lights, cross at cross-walks or corners, look all ways before crossing, stay away from parked cars, and don't run or play on the street. . And by all means, remember that children learn from example. If you disregard the rules of the road...so will they. So watch your step...and theirs. | [== )
