Te Ve ' WEES ATE VIF hy SACLE Drivers reminded to stop for bus With school opening, and 600,000 Ontario school child- ren getting ready to ride school buses, drivers should remember they must stop for school buses, says Minis- ter of Transporation and Communications, James Snow. The school bus stopping law, under Section 120 of The Highway Traffic Act, requir- es traffic travelling in both directions to half -when a stopped school bus flashes its - alternating red signal lights, regardless of the posted speed limit. Traffic may not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or its red lights - at the front and rear of the bus - stop flashing, Failure to stop for a school bus with its alternating red signal lights flashing carries a penalty of four demerit points and a maximum fine of $100. Condition of the driver It is well know that one of the main causes of auto- mobile accidents is: Speed Too Fast For Conditions. The Ontario Safety League points out that the condition of the driver is one of the most important factors that should govern the speed at which the car is driven. Fatique, alcohol, anger, de- sickness, pre- occupation--all bring extra danger to a driver unless he reduces speed to compen- sate. 1 YEAR 2 YEAR 3 YEAR 4 YEAR 5 YEAR GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES Rates subject to change. Member, Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation The law applies regardless of the posted speed limit - on highways, country roads, city, town and village streets. . The only exception is on highways divided by a median strip. Then, only vehicles behind the school bus must stop upon seeing the flashing red lights. On coming traffic .on the op- posite side' of the median may proceed. What is a median strip? It's defined in The Highway Traffic Act as "a physical barrier or an unpaved strip of ground separating traffic travelling in one direction from traffic travelling in the opposite direction." Each municipality has the authority to enact bylaws designating local school bus loading zones. In these loading zones, the school bus driver is not permitted to flash the vehicle's alternating red "lights. Loading zones have identi- fying signs, They can be located only on the same side of the road as a school or non-school facility often visited by school children and teachers - for example, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where many school bus loads of students and teachers arrive from all over the province. School bus drivers cannot stop a bus to drop off or pick up school children on a road or highway opposite a desig- nated loading zone. And at the zone, the bus must be as close as practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway. 9%2% 92% 9%2% 10% 10%4% A school bus is defined under the Highway Traffic Act as a bus used for the transportation of children to and from school that: bears on the rear the words DO NOT PASS WHEN SIGNALS FLASHING; carries two red signal lights on the front and, rear; is painted chrome yellow with black Haring and trim, . No bus other than a school bus may be painted chrome yellow. No motor vehicle other than a school bus may bear the words "Do not pass when signals flashing" or "School Bus." A new regulation effective September 1 requires motor- ists to stop when they see a school crossing guard dis- playing a stop sign while guiding school children ac- ross the road. The stop signs the munici- pality-employed school crossing guards carry are to be used only on roads with speed limits of 40 mph or "less. No one other than one of these guards can use such signs. Failure to stop for the sign could make a driver subject to the general penalty of $20 to $100. "Ontario lost four children last school year crossing to or leaving their school buses. That's four precious lives too many. We hope this will be a fatality-free and injury- free year for our young school bus passengers,' said Mr. Snow.
