SOR /) > ro ARINC 0 =a by Dean J. Kelly KELLY"S NEWS DIGEST The usually Liberal Toronto Star says Trudeau is probably the most disliked Prime. Minister since Confederation. Welfare Minister Marc Lalonde says bilingualism is the cause. Others claim its the capital punishment issue, scandals and the wage and price controls. At any rate since Trudeau's 'new society" speech implying quasi-permanent controls and ex- panded government interference in our lives, the Gallup poll showed a decline from 39 to 29 percent...the lowest ever. I SS INSULT TO INJURY: Marc Lalonde's Dept. of Health and Welfare is buying time on U.S. TV stations for commercials plugging bilingualism in Canada. Meanwhile the governments Canadian Hadio-TV Com- munication Commission Chairman Harry Boyle is going about Canada telling Canadian advertisers to stop buying TV time in the U.S. if they want to go on claiming a tax exemption for their advertising costs. # Ottawa says one thing while doing the opposite. Do 7 what I say...not do as I do, seems to be the policy. Z ; i # MOVIE being made north of Peterborough staring "British actor David Warner and Toronto actress Trudy : Young is called Summer Rain. Plane Crash north of Lindsay kills skydivers..,all members of a Toronto parachute club. The Cessna aireraft had just taken off from the Cameron field when it stalled, plunged to the ground after hitting hydro wires. OPEC oil countries will increase crude oil by 25 percent says respected British Economist. Increases would increase inflation in the U.S. by 2 percent from 5.5 to 7.5 percent. Hard hit would be Italy with an increase of 25 percent, Franch 15 percent, Britain 10 percent (U.K. developing own North Sea reserves) and the Netherlands 12 increase. Canada imports oil on the East coast which would also increase inflation here, as reserves in the West drop. Rising prices for oil and natural gas have led to takeovers on an unprecedented scale in Canada's oil industry-in recent months with shares worth $1 billion changing hands. CE Presidents of Texaco and Fina cabled Premier Regan protesting Nova Scotias extented freeze on oil prices. Regan replied he had no intention of giving the oil companies a windfall profit on existing inventories that would last from 30 to as high as 200 days. How come Regan was the only Premier with enough guts to fight on this issue? No way should existing supplies be increased! The average family will pay an extra $100 for gasoline and heating oil. National Day of Protest (Oct 14) also stands for N.D.P. One labourer when questioned about the one-day strike said candidly he didn't like it--*'It'll cost me $80 in wages and prove nothing." For a 5 day week thats a cool $400 pay...$20,800. a year without overtime. The Federal government white paper on banking has been attacked by the Toronto Star in several editorials. "BANK PROPOSAL SHOWS SELL-OUT MENTAL- ITY) says in part "Uncontrolled interest rates have done little more than fatten bank profits. And the proposals in the government's recent white paper on revision to the Bank Act, permitting banks to enter such business fields as factoring and leasing, will serve to swell the coffers further. An additional boon to bankers held out in the white paper is the permission for banks to offer stock options to their officers and employers." The secrecy over public documents is the first issue on the agenda for 200 of Canada's leading public administrators at their annual conference in Halifax. The Institute of Public Administrators of Canada includes members from three levels of government as well as universities and colleges, Conference chairman Buy Henson has said repeat- edly Government secrecy is a chronic problem in this country because it deprives voters of the power to make informed decisions and Ottawa's attitude toward the change in the system is a sham. Paavo Airola, noted Nutritionist, says NEVER DO ANY FRYING WITH OIL OR MARGARINE! Oils heated to high temperatures become carinogenic (cancer causing). Use only butter for frying. The body needs oil however, and one or two tablespoons of COLD-PRESSED vegetable oils are necessary for good health. (non-hydrogenated). Can be used on salads or taken straight after a meal (helps lose weight). Heavy coffee drinkers invariably show symptoms of B-vitamin deficiencies, even though their diet other- wise is excellent...Adelle Davis. Alcotiol, diuretics oral contraceptives, and strict dieting can cause HB complex deficiencies. The AMA has warned that asprin is a dangerous drug if our diets do not contain enough Vit. C to detoxify it. ASIF should be taken with milk to protect the stomach. Support needed 5 We've been plugging away for some time In support of local youth organizations: that have found them- selves either faced with the prospect of closing their doors. Some organizations such as the local sea cadet group have already closed down, and it is evident that others are In the same situation, ; We run the risk of being somewhat repetitious in supporting the bid of the local army cadets In their last ditch, all-or-nothing effort in initiating a strong active cadet movement here. The organization is recruiting now, and the word is that the program will be continued only If there Is enthusiastic participation and support. It would be a tragedy if this group was allowed to go the way of others in this community. There are opportunities offered by the cadet movement that are unparalled anywhere else. Everything from parachuting to international tours, paid summer camps are offered, not to mention a local program of skiing, snowshoeing, marksmanship camping, canoeing; and much, much more, Risking repetition again, we remind parents that while the initiative and drive must. come from their children, it is up to parents to provide support and encouragement...now and after a youngster becomes involved. . There are, we understand, still a few parents who believe that signing-the dotted line means Junior is lost forever to hardtack and boot camp--that he's issued a rifle and hand grenade and placed on Canada's first line of defence. The Canadian cadet movement de-emphasizes militarism and streeses such things as good citizen- ship, leadership, a sense of purpose, providing outlets for new interests, as well as opportunities for a good time. We hope the organizers get half the enthusiasm that they. display in setting up the program. The community, and the corps will be the winner. Action in Uxbridge They're still doing a lot of heckling, complaining and groaning in Uxbridge about the proposed reception centre that the Canadian Penitentiary Service wants to build. : Difference between the controversy there and the one experienced here in Scugog is that the Uxbridge variety has lasted a good deal longer than the local one led by Fickle Council and the Pros and Cons. In Uxbridge, the more recent trends seem to indicate that it's going to be even more enthusiastic than the delightful jabber we had here. Even Churches have become embroiled in Uxbridge when a number of ministers saw Christian responsibility as a forgotten factor in the Pros and Cons. Attacks from one side or the other seem to be earmarked with even more determination than the variety we had here. The local press has been keeping a running account of the happenings, and particularly the letters to the editors column has revealed the open hostility that has forced one Uxbridge councillor to defend himself in print. It all makes this writer chuckle a bit about a comment made way back when about the open-mind- edness of the Uxbridge community, "If you don't: want it, we'll certainly take it," an Uxbridge official said. "In Uxbridge, we have some sensible people.' Who, when, where, why and what Uxbridge will end up getting Is an interesting enough question. One thing's for certain, though. It's going to be one-hell-of-an election year. D AAT GAGS "A wife can't be forced to testify against her husband... but what if she wants to?" ® «
