'The regular monthly meet- ing was held in the municipal building Thursday, Sept. 2. The president, Mrs. Tom Bell opened the meeting by 'all singing the 'Ode' and repeating the 'Mary Stewart Collect'. Mrs. Bell welcom- ed all present. : Minutes of previous meet- ing were read by the secre- tary Miss Alice Dodds. Several items of corres- pondence were. read and dealt with. Area convention at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto in November, where Dr. Matt, Dymond of Port Perry will be the guest speaker at the dinner on Thursday, Nov. 4th. The Institute display at the Port Perry Fair this year was "Thanksgiving." The annual fall bazaar for Saturday, September 25th in the Latcham Center when there will be booths of plants, vegetables, home baking and sewing, crafts, a lucky draw and tea tables will be a speciality. Members were asked to watch for further notices regarding the bazaar in the "Coming Events" column in the Port Perry Star. Programme convenor, Mrs. Vera Honey, assisted by her group, provided a wonderful and interesting hour. The "Motto" was well explained by Mrs. Raines, "Soil is a bank, guard it well", closing her part with a poem called "The Tree Planter." : Mrs. Honey introduced Mrs. Earl Martin who spoke on her flight and visit to the Frobershire Bay on Baffin Island. A very interesting story on how the people there are provided for. . Following the singing of: "0 Canada' "the meeting, closed with refreshments. Florence Ellicott, P.R.O. Herb course Mrs. Christine Orlob of Port Perry will instruct in the Gardening with Herbs Course, which is offered at Durham College on Mon- days from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., beginning October 4th. Mrs. Orlob states that herbs not only add new and distinctive flavours to food, but many have a cosmetic use, aiding in skin care. Others have medicinal benefits; while some also can be used for disease and pest control in gardening. For examples, when marigolds are planted near roses or potatoes, they "fight" nematodes in the' soil. If aphids are a prob- lem for roses, they can be controlled with a solution made from the leaves of tomatoes. i 7 Faz 4 33 CHAINSAWS Sales & Service A McCullough, Homelite, Skil, Remington, Pioneer & A & A SMALL ENGINES 985-2905 or 985-3963 John Deere Saws.
