6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, Oct. 14, 1976 Early November Opening New arena nearing final stages of construction Scugog's new community arena is quickly nearing completion, and the job star- ted by a handful of local men 21, years ago will soon be accomplished. The new arena, on the north side of Regional Road 8, sits alone in a large field, and its size is very deceiving. The STAR, along with Arena Chairman, Howard Hall, toured the site last week just to see what has been accomplished within the walls of the huge beige and brown structure. . Inside dozens of workers from every sub-trade poss- ible were busy getting the building ready for its sche- duled Nov. 1 opening. The concrete is all poured, work has begun on the plastic boards which will surround the 85' by 200' ice surface, and the mercury vapour lighting is being in- stalled this week. ' A walk down the long corridor which runs "the length of the arena reveals eight storage rooms under the seats, four good sized and two larger dressing rooms, first aid and furnace rooms. From atop of the seating area the entire ice surface can be seen, and a tremen- dous feeling of spaciousness is felt. Massive, bright yellow steel beams line the ceiling, from which hang eleven gas heaters, which will heat the entire viewing area. Work beganthis week on e Ftrigeaion plan. with be testing scheduled to be completed by" October 25. According to a CDS spokes- man, if there are no prob- lems- encountered with the plant, there could be ice in the arena as early as the last week of October. According to Mr. Hall, the only thing in the building that is constructed of wood are the boards and roof, thus making the building almost fire proof, and safe for the public. Although the building is expected to be open to the public by the first of Noyem- ber, the lobby area will not be complete and the official opening will take place in mid January 1977 with a special weekend programme lined up for the occasion.
