"Jacklighters" kill two horses, wounds one on Little Britain farm € A $1,500 reward has been offered by Little Britain resident, Kenneth Ross 'Holmes, for information leading to the arrest of "jacklighters' believed to be responsible for the shooting of two of his Appaloosa horses on his R.R. 1, Little Britain farm. Jiay Jacklighters, hunters who blind deer or moose with bright lights and shoot them while they are temporarily blinded, have been blamed for the shootings in a field near Valentia, ' The two dead horses were valued at $500 each. A third mare was wounded in the incident. Police said Mr. Holmes checked the horses in the field around 8 a.m. and "" found one dead and two injured. One died after the veterinarian arrived and the third horse received only a flesh wound in the right cheek. According to police, a high-powered rifle was used. Police also doubt that there is any connection - between the shooting incident and the sadistic mutilation of horses and cows in the Mount Forest area about three weeks ago. Mr. Holmes said gun shots woke him up at 2460 a.m. Sunday. There were three volleys of three or four shots each. He got out of bed after the second volley and saw a car southbound on a nearby road. He did not relate the car to the shooting of the horses in the pasture about one half mile from the Holme's farm- house. : Six hours passed from the time he heard the shots to the time he found the one dead and two wounded horses 'in the field. } "I would not want to say it was done on purpose, but they (the jacklighters) must have been pretty bloody amateurish to mistake a horse for a deer," said Mr. Holmes. There were four mares and two ponies in the 25-acre field at the time of the shooting. The one animal found dead had bled to death from a wound in the side. The second animal was wounded in the left flank and left rear hock while trying to run away, The animal was 'though taken to the barn in a trailer, but died later.
