18 -- PORT PORT By Andrea Jones A determined effort led the Grant Menzies Pacers to a 3-2 win over Port Hope Midgets on Monday, Nov. 1. It was a tight checking game and the first period was pretty even for both teams. the scoring with a deadly shot from the blueline filling the top right corner. Rob Parker who was filling in for the ailing Mark Lee earned an assist as did Jim Kane. Gibson started in net for the Pacers and handled 9 of ten shots fired at him that period. In a flurry of shots he stopped two quick ones but Robertson and Geer were tied up and failed to clear away either the puck or the visitors. Rob Greiner played a super game, skating miles and constantly checking. He had trouble hitting the net, however .as he let a sizzler go off the posts. Merle Schewaga came in midway through the 2nd period and allowed the re- bound of his first stop to slip in. Pete Lane scored his second of the night, tieing the game, Mike Geer and Bill Owen assisting. Owens earned another assist as he roared down the wing, slid the puck over to Greiner who was in the clear. Greiners shot was blocked but Rob Kemp was right there to bang in the rebound. When the O.M.H.A. re- ferees didn't show up on Thursday, Newcastle hastily conscripted two young men to do the job. Novice lose Port Perry Mersco Novice opened their 1976-77 season at Hampton arena on Sun- day where they lost by a score of 3-2 to the LNHL Black Hawks. The Black Hawks jumped into a two goal lead in the first period before the Port Thé Grant Menzies Pacers came out flying and looked like they might run New- castle right out of the rink. Bill Owen got the puck out from behind' the net and onto Danny Taylors stick who wasted no time slamm- ing it in for the Pacers first goal. Mike Healey, back from the Flamingos, scored the second goal, unassisted, driving one past the goalie from just inside the blue- line. Rob Greiner looked a little like Bobby Clark out there; hustling, checking and constantly causing Newcastle to worry. Shots in the period were 11-2 in favour of Port Perry as the Newcastle netminder was doing some work. to Hampton boys got on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by Jim Abraham. In the. second period, Greiner picked up a goal from Baird and Healey on a definate offside pass, and Newcastle retaliated twenty seconds later scoring right between Gibsons pads. The - Pacers threw a barrage of shots at the Newcastle goalie until finally Greiner tipped one in from Perigoe. Going into the third period with a 4-1 lead, the Pacers decided to rest. No penalties in the game caused -some backward glances, as the game wore on Port Perry gave up the puck too often. © = 7" Newcastle capitalized on Pacers mistakes and Port Perry was lucky to escape with a 4-4 tie. Schewaga let in three of seven shots in the third period but he had little help from anyone in front. : Newcastle was back in Port on Monday and the Pacers head for Pickering on Wed. November 10. Scoring for the Bobcats was Kevin Nesbitt, Tony Oxley, David Canning and Rob Parker. Bowmanville goals came from Jim Braun, Tom Fowler, and Mark Bis- sonetle. PORT PERRY 11 PORT HOPE 2 On Thurs., November 4, the Murray Williams Bobcats Midget 2 team hosted Port Hope and came up with an 11 to 2 victory.
