Bobcats defeat Uxbridge 6-1 by Scott Wilbur On Dec. 23 the Murray Williams Bobcats Midget 2's recorded a 6-1 victory over Uxbridge. Mark Cleveland opened the scoring with assists to Taylor and Hope. Steve Geer made. it 2-0 as he banged in Rob Parkers pass. - Uxbridge narrowed the margin to 2-1 but the Bobcats came back with 4 unanswered goals. Tony Oxley had 2 while Mark Cleveland and Mike Geer had singles. Assists went to Ashmore with 3, Oxley 2, Cleveland, Canning, Wilbur and M. Geer all had single assists. Craig Larmer turn- ed in a steady performance between the pipes. On Sunday, Dec. 26 the Bobcats participated in the first annual Bantam-Midget Tournament held in Port. The Bobcats faced Port Hope A's in the first en- counter but came up on the short end 3-2. Port Hope opened the scoring but Port tied it up with a goal by Dave Canning as he went in on a breakaway and deked the goalie. Wilbur and Cle-. veland picked up assists. Port Hope took the lead again but the Bobcats fought back as Jamie Taylor poked in a rebound. M. Geer and S. Geer picked up assists on this play. If the Bobcats had some luck around the net the Local "all-stars" in no admission basketball game Basketball fans should keep Wednesday, January 12 open to attend the Scugog Chamber of Commerce - Big Brothers game, aimed .at raising money for the "brothers". The game, which wil begin at Port Perry High School auditorium at 8:00 p.m. will have a fine line-up of athletes and should pro- vide some enjoyable enter- tainment...if not basketball. Some of those lining up for the Big Brother's will be Jim Burnett, Dr. John Stewart, Keith Elliot, Dr. John Hammet and for the Cc of C., Richard Drew, Cliff Crowell, Ralph Ballard and many more exciting stars. Jim Treen turned in a spectacu- lar performance, The following day the Bobcats clobbered Stouff- ville 7-2. The Bobcats spot- ted Stouffville a 4 goal lead and never looked back. . This put the Bobcats in the consolation final against the Port Perry "A" team. The "A" took a 4 goal lead that seemed to take the life out of the Bobcats but they proved they still had life in them as Fellows and Oxley Legionaires win tourney (continued lot of folks think its a heck of a way to end a game, but after 40 minutes of team against team, unable to de- clare a winner, what better way than individual against individual, shooter against goaltender. Well, those were the rules, so_a slip of the coin sent Ports shooter first and Horton just missed the open corner of the net. The first Uxbridge shooter was topped by Lovering. Ports second shooter, Storry put the pres- sure on Uxbridge as he dek- ed their goaltender and flipped the puck into the net. The second Uxbridge shooter lost control of the puck as he tried to deke Lovering and the puck slid harmlessly in- to the corner. Blayone then duplicated Storry's goal and it was game over. Legion- aires 4, Uxbridge 2. _ Dec. 28th in the champion- ship game, Port defeated a strong Sutton club 4 to 3. The Legionaires came up with just a super team effort to win the big one. Fewer got the only goal in the first period when he scored on a long shot from just over the red line that fooled the Sutton goaltender. A. Jones from Horton made it 2 to 0 for Port as he scored from close range at the midway mark of the second period. Sutton came back just over a minute later to score their first goal. Just 27 seconds remained in the period when they scored again as Banni- ster poked home a loose puck from a scramble in front of the net. Port seemed to sag a bit as the momentum swit- ched in Sutton's favour. However, Lovering kept us in the game with a few good saves. Early in the third period Storry put us one up as he hopped into the goal crease and poked a loose puck into the net. This set the stage for the prettiest goal of the game and the one that proved to be the winner. Both teams were playing a man shor when Henricks and Young got a two on one break with Young lugging the puck and setting up Henricks with a good pass. They earned their second championship trophy in as many tries this season. Recent league play saw the Legionaires bomb Port Hope 10 - 0 and Newcastle 10 - 1and lose a squeaker 1 to 0 to Uxbridge. Adding to their point totals were Storry 10 (including a- 4 goal effort) Horton 9, A. Jones 6, Wallace 5, Vizely and Crowell 4 each, Goreski 3, Burnett, Blayone, Fewer and R. Jones 2 each, Young and Tremblay 1 each. House League NOVICE: Sportsland 1 - Realty 0 Sportsland only goal came from Jamie Cannon assisted by Tim Cannon. Chris Cookman registered the shutout. Kinsmen 5 - Emiels 0 Brad McNenly and Tim Maw had two goals each: while Warren Geer Tegisted the single. ATOM: Lions 2 - Swamp Auto 2 Meisner and Summers scored for Lions while Richards and Cockerton replied for Swamp. U.A.W. 2 - Scugog Lumber 0 Clay Dempgey and Danny Tomchishin scored for U.A.W. This seemed to put some spark in the Cats but the ""A's scored one more goal to make the final 5-2 in their favour, The Bobcats travelled to Stouffville on Thursday, Dec. 30 and defeated them 4-1. Canning, Ashmore, Taylor and M. Geer scored for Port while Cleveland, Fellows, Oxley, Young and Ashmore all picked up single assists. Craig Larm- er made several good saves to preserve the win. The Bobcats face Markham in the new arena on Thurs. Jan. 8 so come out and watch a fast skating, hard hitting midget 2 hockey game. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1977 -- 15 Broomball Brooklin 3 - Coulter's 0 Brooklin extended their unbeaten streak as they topped Coulter's perform- ance. Bill Down, the Brook- lin captain, scored one in each period. In the first session, Dave Fuller tallied an assist on Bill Down's first goal of the game. In the second, Ian Down set up Bill's second goal with Ken Vipond also getting an assist. The last goal of the game gave Bill Down his hattrick as Marty Van- Heuval and Larry Down getting assists. Both goalies, Keith Fraser from Coulter's and Charlie Dennis from Brooklin turn- - - LJ activities ed in fine performances with Dennis recording the shutout. Smit's 2 - Brian's 0 The last place Smit's are starting to come around as they posted their second consecutive win. After losing all their previous starts. Harris McLure scored both Smit's goals after the first two periods went scoreless. At the 6:48 mark of the third period, Casey VanSchagen and John Gerber set up Harris McLure for his first of the night.
