2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1977 Durham Region family Y.M.C.A. expands to Port Perry The former Whitby District Family Y.M.C.A., now newly named the Dur- ham Region Family Y.M.C.A. is presently expanding to the Port Perry area, with the head program office in Whitby. There are other areas being developed by the Y.M.C.A. which are Ux- bridge and Blackstock. This organization is expected' to be a beneficial asset to the community of Port Perry and surrounding communi- _ ties and the public is urged to make use of this new community service. Eventually the Y.M.C.A. intends to meet the needs of every age in the community. Presently, two programs are organized to begin in Port Perry. One of these programs is "Ladies Take a Break". Ladies of all ages are invited to take a break in this two hour Wednesday morning program, from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., being offered at the Anglican Parish Hall. A wide selection of program- ming has been arranged for the ladies during these sessions. At the same time, while the ladies are enjoying their program, there will be Ay: 3 IYER TH a separate children's pro- gram offered for any mother's pre-school children including a sitter for babies. The children's program includes painting, pasting, puzzles, play dough, playing with educational toys, and a mid-morning snack of crackers and a drink. This is followed by a story, songs and organized play. Mrs. Linda Skerratt will organize and direct the children's program. Mrs. Kristine Wilson, the ladies programmer, will lead the ladies in a half hour of exercises at the beginning of each weekly session. This will be followed by a coffee break for the ladies. Then they will enjoy a program of either a demonstration, a speaker or a group craft. The program arranged for the ladies on the first morn- ing, Wednesday, January 12, is a floral demonstration by Mrs. Ives of Ives Florist, Port Perry. She will demon- strate the art of arranging flowers and answer any questions the group has con- cerning this and the care of foliage plants as well. The group will be able to ask questions as Mrs. Crosier demonstrates. George Smith, a Port Perry lawyer, will be the speaker on January 26. He will conduct an informative question and answer period of making wills, arranging mortgages when purchasing a home and othe subjects of general interest to the group. This should be a very interesting session. During the month of February, the firemen from the Port Perry Fire Depart- ment are coming one morn- ing to speak about fire safety in the home. Mrs. Kristine Wilson, adult programmer, is going to teach a two week session craft in February as well, and Mrs. Joyce May of Ashburn will be coming to demonstrate the art of ceramics. She will be show- ing the group all the different stages of ceramics from the beginning to the finished product. Plans are being made for the Port Perry's Ladies Take a Break Group to go to a fashion show in March. The Whitby' Ladies' Take a Break Group are having the fashion show at St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Whitby. The Brooklin Ladies Take a Break Group will also 'be going. The fashion show will be put on by Eaton's. Elizabeth Moore, Program Director at the Y.M.C.A. office in Whitby, will be speaking to the ladies another morning in March about the Y.M.C.A. and the variety of programs it offers the Durham Region. The programs arranged for the ladies are a very beneficial morning break for all ladies and a complete morning break for mothers from their children. The Ladies Take a Break Program is a ten week session, Wednesday, Jan. 12 and finishing Wednesday, March 16. This is a weekly program offered every Wed- nesday at the Anglican Parish Hall, 270 North St., at the corner of North and John in Port Perry. Registration will be taken the first morn- ing, Wednesday, January 12. The fees are .$15. for non- members of the Durham Region Family Y.M.C.A. and $12. for members. Also, they educational puzzles, sandbox activities and create with play dough. During this hour the mothers and their children will valuably learn more about each other through the activity. At the beginning of the second hour the mothers and their pre-schoolers separate. The children then have a mid-morning snack of crackers and a drink, follow- ed by a formal program of a story, action songs, and organized play. During other sessions of the program Mrs. Mary Wilson will present various topics concerning the various aspects of a pre- schooler's life and the parent role.
