Q: One of stated aims is to _.set up additional _congre-. gations and to handle rapid church development in Can- 'ada, yet we hear every day that church attendance dropping alarmingly. A: This js very difficult to assesS. There was a study done this past summer that indicated just that, yet we - find on the other hand that all across the country, people are seeking out the church more than ever. 1 sense among the clergy a certain optimism that people are turning back to the church in. greater numbers than ever before. Young people should be encouraged to this end. No one with any sense has ever denied that the church has a good, steadying, calming influence on society. i Q: At least on the surface, our society seems to have developed a greater social consciousness, doesn't it? A: That is right. Q: And the church tends to reflect that, doesn't it? A: 1 think so. Q: But society seems to "have céme to that point outside of the church. The church has often been criti- cized for practicing a kind of passive. 5 ism. Non-involvement with the outside, very concerned about their own and not much outside the church. In the fields of human rights, civil rights and even anti- war; the church seems to have rather timidly. and even reluctantly, A: Yes, I would' have to agree with that, but only in part. The church has been highly sensitive in involving itself in anything that would smack of Church and State. I for one would never like to see a National church. The church then could no longer be the conscience of human- ity. Q: But that's the question. Has the church been the conscience of humanity, or has it simply moved with the tide? Should it not have been the leader? A: Yes, I think you are quite right in saying that it wasn't a very stirring con- science at times.... / Q: As it should have n? A: Yes. Q: Will church complacen- cy return with perhaps any future slip back into com- placency by the public? A: I'm not sure that the church should be accused of being complacent. Perhaps we should go back to what we said before, that it wasn't vocal enough about them. Q: Do you think the church will slip back to being less vocal? A: I don't think so. Don't forget, we are getting a new breed in the church. The church is moving more rapidly in tune with the times than ever before. " Q: About your experiences ...you are obviously respect- ed in political and church circles, yet -politics is the science of compromise while the church teaches uncom- promising principles. Has this created any problems for you in your career? A: No, I never did. I never compromised by funda- mental political and Chris- tian principles. You know, I sometimes wonder about the attitudes of people of your profession that politics is a profession that, well, per- haps the most decent people shouldn't get involved in. But you know, when you really study politics, you'll find that its politicians are no better or worse than the general run of society. Q: But have you ever had to make a choice between the two? Between political ex- pediency and your Christian principles? A: Let's say I've been faced with the request, but I never hesitated to say no. What ical party derives the most benefit is irrelevant. Q: There is no dichotomy then, between the Matt Dymond who walks into a political caucus meeting and the Matt Dymond who walks into church on Sunday. A: No. But the Matt Dymond who walks into caucus is better prepared to participate in the caucus because he's had some experience in the church. One compliments the other.
